It should be fair to all who are now registered legally and not single out any group to be treated unfairly. Lets start with Voter ID for all Registered Republicans, since they are so in favor of this law. We can require all Republicans to have a Voter ID by say ... this November 1st. Sort of a trial basis. If it works well for those Republicans who want this plan... then it can be implemented for all voters by the following November.
I haven't been following this fabricated story too closely, but from what I've read, it is a mandate for ALL registered voters. It doesn't mandate a voter id for a specific political party. Democrats are claiming their constituents are affected at a greater rate than republicans. Their argument is it affects them disproportionately.

Birth certificates are provided BY DEFAULT to the parents of a child born in the state. When I had to get my working papers, all I had to do is ask my parents for mine. Is the justice department saying that poor citizens and minorities are too irresponsible to hold on to, or know where their birth certificate is?

I think you and I can find some common ground on this birth certificate issue. I see no need for the government to even issue a birth certificate. Why does the government need documentation of every birth and require it for things like passports and enrollment into government schools?

We all make assumptions... I was making an assumption about living poor in a hurricane zone.
Other "assumptions" seem to be that the voters being disenfranchised are all poor, minorities, and that they get government checks and use food stamps.
For what ever reason that they no longer have their birth certificate... if it was lost, stolen, misplaced or swept away in a Mississippi hurricane... the new law does require a voter ID... To get a voter ID, they need a birth certificate, and to get a birth certificate, they first need a photo ID.

Every town/village/city has records that can be checked and if you were born here then your birth record is on file. The local police dept also will issue a photo ID to students or seniors who don't have one.

And the Justice departments assumption is if you are poor or are a minority, you are less likely to have your birth certificate than anyone else.
And I ask why do they assume this? What about minorities that aren't poor? What about poor people that aren't minorities?
