During the final years of the Turnpike Drive-In on Rt. 20, they switched over to a low powered AM radio transmitter so that you could just tune the movie in on your car radio, rather than keep repairing the speakers.
The results were hilarious as during the last couple of years, they started showing soft core porn. When driving down Rt. 20, you could pick up the radio signal for about 1/4 mile in each direction. There are few things funnier than the soundtrack of a soft core porn movie, and the look on the faces of your passengers is priceless, as you innocently turn the radio from "Me and You And a Dog Named Boo", over to the sounds of wah-wah guitar, and moaning.
My family used to take us to the Mohawk Drive-In quite a bit. I remember seeing Bonnie and Clyde, Patton, Yellow Submarine, M*A*S*H, and dozens of others there. Occasionally we would ride bicycles up and sit behind the fence and watch. The snack bar had outdoor speakers, so you could hear well enough, and there was usually a beer party or two going on. |
