It is no extra cost to the taxpayers. The school transfers the money allotted for the 'troubled kid' to the schools that are equipped to handle these kids. The school districts just don't want to give up the money even if it is in the best interest of the 'troubled kids' or the 'un-troubled kids'..........or for the ENTIRE school system!!!
Incorrect. If you send a child to school and transport him to a mainstream school Schenectady is charged between $20 and $50 per day to transport him. To a special School, the transportation costs are 2.5 to 3.5 times as much. You can't magically transfer money that isn't there. Schenectady County pays the transportation costs AND the child's tuition, which is a great deal more than mainstream schools.
Believe me, if you are spending $100-$250 per week to send a child to school and you change it to $375 -$825 a week, someone's taxes are going up.
Do you have any idea how many troubled students there actually are in Schenectady County?
You could hire a 50 man SWAT team for less money than it costs to ship them out.
You clearly have no desire to learn the truth about school crimes and violence.
I posted a link to the FBI's data on the matter.
You attempt to argue the costs inaccurately, and the facts are in. School violence, bullying, larceny, drugs, weapons and gangs in the schools, are reality now. 42 percent dropout rate. Who would want to stay in schools that are run by the bullies and gangs? They see enough of that in their neighborhoods of Schenectady.
You solution to dump problem children on others is one of the worst ideas ever. How about being responsible for our own problems, not dump it on others.
The problems exist. They will be dealt with, now or when someone kills, injures or rapes the innocent.
Then you can tell them that they are not your problem.

The proposed budget allocates roughly $8 million dollars to transport students to school in Schenectady.
That is an increase of over $470,000 from last year.
It costs double or triple to send the students elsewhere.
To be even more specific, the proposed budget wants to return students previously placed outside the district saving $200,000.
School expenses are so high that Schenectady schools are staggering their hours of operations so that the same buses can be used at more schools; thereby saving another $200,000.
The proposed budget is 156 Million dollars to educate 9600 students. That is over 16 thousand dollars per student , per year.
Adding $2,000 a month per student, to ship students elsewhere would bankrupt Schenectady. 25 students would add another half million.
I hope some of this is sinking in.
A lawsuit when 1 student gets stabbed, shot or beaten would cost far more than a School Resource Officer.
Failure to take action now, will ultimately increase the settlement of any actions against this already bankrupt city, by the claim of gross negligence, for not providing proper security measure that are commonplace nationwide.
