Just heard on the radio, NY has collected 23 BILLION DOLLARS in Cigarette taxes in the past 5 years. 23,000,000,000.00!  They've raised the prices in upstate NY to over $9, sometimes $10/pack .. where in other states it's less than half that.  Supposedly this was done to increase the "stop smoking" program and reduce tobacco "marketing".

Here's the kicker - if suddenly everyone in NY stopped smoking (or a large percentage) - where would NY come up with the $ revenue?  Only 4% of the money collected (a generous estimate) is spent toward the "stop smoking" programs ... the rest goes into the general fund.   We've gotta make up that $ from somewhere.

I'm sure glad I brought a good supply (10+ cartons) before I came up here .. it's time to get a friend to send me more, for personal use of course. I paid $42/carton ... here they're $95+ depending on the market and quantity purchased.

You both have it backwards... The taxpayers of NY subsidize the smokers... not the other way around.

Tobacco-Related Monetary Costs in New York
Annual smoking-related health care costs and lost productivity in NY total $14.2 billion
Annual health care expenditures in the State directly caused by tobacco use: $8.17 billion
Annual State Medicaid program's total health expenditures caused by tobacco use: $5.47 billion
Annual health care expenditures in New York from secondhand smoke exposure: $317 million
Residents' state/federal taxes to cover smoking-caused gov't costs: $5.9 billion ($903/household)
Smoking-caused productivity losses in New York: $6.05 billion
Smoking-caused health costs and productivity losses per pack sold in New York: $21.91

(Lung cancer, emphysema and heart disease are very expensive   )
New York State taxpayers don't break even until the tax on cigarettes reaches $21.91
a pack.

I'm surprised that Bumbler would admit to knowing so many criminals... especially when "Vendors who fail
to comply may face criminal and/or civil liability for mail and/or wire fraud and for violation of the Racketeer
Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act."

(“Cigarettes are, in fact, the world's most  widely smuggled legal consumer product.”)

Something for Bumble's "friends" to consider:
Evasion of the New York cigarette tax presents an opportunity for organized crime and terrorist
groups to take advantage of a smoker’s willingness to seek out lower-priced packages of cigarettes.
These groups are able to generate funding by purchasing large quantities of cigarettes from tax-free
sources (such as Native American reservations and internet cigarette vendors) and then selling them on the
streets or the black market at substantially lower prices than state licensed retailers. For example, in
2004, members of the Seneca Nation of Indians were convicted of selling untaxed cigarettes to a
smuggling ring with ties to Hezbollah.

(Bumble's Buddies Support Terrorists!  Who knew?)
Note To Bumblers 'Friends'.
Evading or refusing to pay the tax is punishable bya fine of up to $10,000 and a prison sentence of
up to five years per offense, in addition to tax penalties and forfeitureof the cigarettes.

Maybe they buy them in Vermont?

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Tobacco-Related Monetary Costs in New York
Annual smoking-related health care costs and lost productivity in NY total $14.2 billion  - subsidize lost productivity with welfare

Annual health care expenditures in the State directly caused by tobacco use: $8.17 billion - Job creation in the medical field.

Annual State Medicaid program's total health expenditures caused by tobacco use: $5.47 billion - More stimulus and job creation in the medical field.

Annual health care expenditures in New York from secondhand smoke exposure: $317 million - MORE JOB CREATION!!!

Residents' state/federal taxes to cover smoking-caused gov't costs: $5.9 billion ($903/household)  JOBS, JOBS, AND MORE JOBS...UNION JOBS AT THAT!

Smoking-caused productivity losses in New York: $6.05 billion
Smoking-caused health costs and productivity losses per pack sold in New York: $21.91  - Looks like cigarettes are creating a lot of economic stimulus, both in government and the private sector.  If printing and giving away money and food stamps is the solution to this recession, I think box may have stumbled across the ultimate solution.  FREE CIGARETTES!!!  Just think of the billions if not TRILLIONS in economic activity this would create - it would create jobs in both in government and in the private sector, not to mention the tax revenue collected from sales alone.  Maybe Obamacare should mandate insurance companies pay for cigarettes, that would really jump start this economy.

(Lung cancer, emphysema and heart disease are very expensive   )

Hey, the ones I transported were for my own personal use - they're exempt from NY tax.  I'm free to bring as many as I like with me.

Hell, I even brought my handgun - so arrest me.

My wife and i quit smoking due to the cost.  I just feel bad for some people i know who are already poor, and paying 10 bucks a pack to smoke.. It adds up quick.. I feel bad 1)That they are too stupid to quit 2) that the taxes are so freaking high on them.  But that's what's great about America, you can do something about it, you can work harder (more) to afford cigs, or quit smoking.

No no, i'm saying people who can't afford smoking, and pay that 10 bucks a day are stupid , and it is stupid to choose smoking over things like buying your kid stuff they need like new clothes.  Stupid.. and selfish.  I don't think smokers are stupid, i think spending the money on them when your broke is stupid.  Can you afford to put money in your gas tank and smoke?  Do you coose smoking over being able to drive to look for a job?  That's stupid.

As stupid as any addict. Stupid for starting, and stupid for not quitting.

It's stupid that a small percentage of elitist in America feel they are obligated to empower their legislator to pass a law taxing a LEAGAL product they do not use, in order to detour those that do choose to use tobacco, because of course, they know best.

When a Snickers candy bar is taxed up to $10 a bar, and a person like box provides you with statistics justifying the tyrants in government excessive taxation, I won't call you stupid when you choose to purchase and enjoy the candy bar you've always enjoyed, I will call the totalitarians like box the totalitarians they are.

You only have one life to live; you might as well enjoy it before you die.  If a cigarette brings that enjoyment, so be it.  Don’t let the totalitarians shame you into adopting their desired behaviors through their coercion.
