Ewwwwww...
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/03/is-pink-slime-in-the-beef-at-your-grocery-store/

I did some research, and apparently Pricechopper by policy does not use this filler.  Awesome.  I knew i was  overpaying for my food for a reason!

I suspect the pink slime makes ground beef more "sticky", i.e., to make burgers keep their shape on the grill.
One of the times I specifically remember that is when I bought the 10lb box of hamburg patties at BJ's for a graduation party and tried to use the patties I had left in few recipe's. I did it once and threw the rest away when it got too old to use it as Burgers.
I get my "non-party" meat at Sals, I don't think they use pink slime.

I always tell my wife we should try Sal's.  I personally am very fond of Fred the Butcher in Menands.

What they did is make it legal to cook down the scraps, blast it with ammonia (to kill bacteria) , and put in into the mixture and not label it as anything other then ground beef.   IT's more to fill it out with biproduct to make them money.

Hot Dogs or bologna?  UG NO!

OSCAR MAYER, BOLOGNA:
INGREDIENTS: Mechanically, Separated Chicken, ( PINK SLIME)
Pork, Water, Corn Syrup, Contains Less than 2% of Salt, Sodium Lactate, Flavor, Sodium Phosphate,
Autolyzed Yeast, Sodium Diacetate, Sodium Erythorbate, (Made From Sugar), Sodium Nitrite, Dextrose,
Extractives of Paprika, Potassium Phosphate, Sugar, Potassium Chloride.

HOT DOGS
The most popular of all categories, the skinless varieties, have been stripped of their casings after
cooking. Water or ice, or both, may be used to facilitate chopping or mixing or to dissolve curing
ingredients.
The finished products may not contain more than 30% fat or no more than 10% water, or
a combination of 40% fat and added water. Up to 3.5% non-meat binders and extenders
(such as nonfat dry milk, cereal, or dried whole milk) or 2% isolated soy protein may be used, but
must be shown in the ingredients statement on the product's label by its common name.
Hot dogs can contain any amount of mechanically separated chicken or turkey.

If you eat bologna or hot dogs... YOU EAT PINK SLIME!

philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.
