Private practice attorney Tom Buchanan is running for a seat on the State Supreme Court bench in the 4th Judicial District. Buchanan, who has worked at the Albany firm Hacker Murphy LLP since 1998, is vying for one of four seats, three of which are open because of forced retirements. Voters in the 4th Judicial District, which spans 11 counties from Schenectady, Saratoga, Fulton and Montgomery counties north to the Canadian border, will select delegates in the primary election, who convene to select the party’s candidates for the November general election. It is expected there will be four Republican and four Democratic candidates on the ballot for the general election. The top four winners in the fall will take office in January 2013, opening chambers in their home counties and hearing primarily civil cases. Justices hold 14-year terms. Buchanan is a 1998 Albany Law School magna cum laude graduate and has previously served as chairman of the Rotterdam and Schenectady County Republican committees. He lives in Rotterdam and has three children.
