There are lots of single moms who tonight will lay out their bills and decide which one to pay and which one to put on hold... food or bills is often the choice. Their plan is to make it to the next payday.
So lets tax the single mom an extra 7.65% every week so she can live poor NOW, and ever poorer 40 years from now. That's if the stress of single mother life doesn't kill her before then. In that case, the house wins.(government)
Are you two serious? There are people who are constantly broke because they spend what ever comes in... then there is actual poverty. An extra $50 or $60 a week... still wouldn't pay the bills.
Are you two so insulated from actually poor people?

I work with actually poor people...and those that "came from" actually poor but still remain in that realm....living off of clothing from trucks, cell phones from trucks, national grid in other peoples names, etc etc......
$13,000/year with 2 kids is poverty.....tack on a sugar daddy and the 'poor' disappears but the character remains.....
fighting one's way out of poor is character, choosing the 'least' of the offerings as sufficient is also character, two different versions.....

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

box, you swallow the liberal bs without even looking what you are eating. i shop at the ghetto hannaford and have seen PLENTY of what the poor buy on food stamps. i cant tell you how many times i saw them buying at LEAST $20 worth of empty calorie garbage drinks for them and their kids. water is FREE, and better for you..again, a lot of the problem is BAD choices people make.... what you are insulated from is anything contrary to the dnc playbook....48 years of the "great society" programs, what has it really accomplished?

55, don't you get the game box plays? Everything is to the extremes. To box and the liberal, poor is ALWAYS by circumstance NEVER by poor choices. Every government program is for people living on the margins, yet the numbers on the margins grow and grow, and become more dependent on an entitlement system that is on the brink of insolvency.
Everybody not in poverty is of privilege, and everybody in poverty is a victim of those not in poverty. People in poverty are victims alright, victims of failed government policy and failed public education, creating generational welfare. It's not a social safety net, but rather a social hammock.

An extra $50-60 would make a huge difference to some and could be the difference if they're eating good that week or might be able to pay that bill that came in the mail. There are those who make just a tad over what the government calls poverty and can't receive assistance, those are the ones who could use that money because they rely on themselves to get by every week.

Haha man you have no idea. I'm not even going to tell you my situation because I don't want sympathy from nobody, your head would probably explode if you knew how I live but yet still am a libertarian that believes in personal responsibility, pretty much goes against everything you were ever taught or believe in.

Tbird. I see the same thing that you do. People posing as poor to milk the system for every dime. So since we both agree that that group is NOT poor... lets continue on to those who actually are poor. OK? Or was I right the first time... that you deny that any poor exist in this country?

Sure , there are poor here...I will digress a bit before going on... We have the "richest" poor in the world. If you want to see real poor, go to Columbia or just about any central/northern South American country. These people live in glorified cardboard shacks on the side of hill that routinely get destroyed by seasonal rains..Their children quit school as young as 10 and pan handle in the streets to tourists (like myself). Chavez claims to be a man of the people, his country is about the worst.. digress over....
I have no problem helping the legitimately poor, the problem is that no one wants to confront the waste and fraud in the system. No one wants to criticize the mother who gets pregnant over and over again without a prayer of supporting the new children. Is it fear from backlash? The fear that you'll be called a racist? (funny, most of the people of social assistance are white) or is it more sinister, like holding on to votes?
Mt Pleasant is supposed to be worse than Hamilton hill as far as poverty is concerned, I drive through there everyday....Look up at the houses as you drive by...I can't believe the number of satellite dishes I see. It's that kind of sight that makes you wonder, and makes a lot of people mad. Until we confront the fraud and the waste, I don't see things ever improving because we will spending money on people who don't really need it.

If they didn't have satellite dishes, how would they be told who to vote for? How would they know how bad they have it? How would they know when to take shelter from a thunderstorm? The propaganda tube needs to be piped into ALL HOMES. Bird, you expect the "poor" to live without MSNBC and The Ed Show? You are heartless Bird, really.TIC
I know 'poor' who have a job, struggle to pay their bills, and do with out the coffee from the coffee shop. They are barely making it, and any added expense is a financial disaster. For me a flat tire is an annoyance, for them a flat tire is doing with out some thing to pay for a new tire. They drive to work on the spare tire donut for weeks before there is enough money for a new one.
Their $500 health care deductible every year is a major obstacle, so they seldom go to the Dr, and their kids go every 1 1/2 years for checkups instead of every year. They got rid of "basic cable" in favor of an antenna for their TV. They buy at the thrift shop for clothes and buying food is a daily struggle. Buy what's 'nutritious' or buy what is 'inexpensive'?
You can laugh at the poor all you want... they are an easy target, but that doesn't make them not exist.

Nearly everything you've mention above I DO! The kids go for yearly checkups, but I haven't been to a doctor in YEARS. I buy clothes (once a year if that, much of my clothes are dated) at discount shops. And fruits and vegetables are limited in the house because they are expensive, and a lot of processed food, more than I care to have.
I think you don't understand how many people live like what you described that aren't collecting welfare. Then there are those that use the welfare system for their necessities, and then buy every modern day luxury with every additional penny they have. They structure their finances around their welfare benefits as part of their permanent income. I have people I work with that ask for a reduction of hours because they need to qualify for certain welfare programs. They refuse the company health insurance so they can keep their kids on State insurance.
Go into some of these gas stations and see how many people are buying lottery tickets and scratch offs - AKA the poor man’s tax. More money wasted…But don’t tell them that, they’ll tell you ‘you have to be in it to win it’.

Cicero can't discuss the POOR with out discussing his right wing propaganda view of the POOR.
As I posted above, there are those who pretend to be poor and milk the system. As I posted above, that is not who I am discussing here.
The example that I used is a single parent with kids who's not on welfare. The kids do receive either free or reduced meals at school, and they do receive a week at summer camp (not sure who pays for that) but I think it's not the taxpayers. They also pay NO INCOME TAXES, but pay many other taxes, both State & Federal.
When ever the poor are mentioned... there is a Conservative auto program that goes off in every Conservative brain that deletes facts and inserts "WELFARE CHEATS" instead. They seem incapable (as Cic was in this post) of discussing poverty... it ALWAYS reverts to welfare cheats.

How is it any better when libs do the exact same thing when they ignore the fraud and cheating like it doesn't exist?

Box, these aren't welfare cheats, the social worker explains how to qualify for the benefits. They are making a decision based on welfare guidelines. A lot of the people I'm talking about a very nice and smart people. These people aren't cheating the system, they are utilizing it to their greatest benefit. It's all legal.

I'll tell you a true story about members of my own family (in laws).. The husband hasn't worked in 30 years because of a "permanent disability" workman's comp claim he submitted. He can't work, but he can hunt (with a powerbow), do stuff under the table, etc. His wife CHOSE to work a seasonal job for over 20 years knowing she would be laid off for approximately 3 months and collected unemployment until work started again... she did that for 25 years. All the while, they got rental assistance and heat assistance. Other than not owning their own house, having one late model car instead of two, and taking vacations... THEY LIVE NO DIFFERENT THAN MY FAMILY DOES...Cable, electronics, cell phones, internet access, etc. How is that right? This kind of thing is commonplace, but some people choose to ignore it. Why don't I turn them in? They are family. Would I feel bad if they did get caught? no... Honestly, if someone did turn them in, they could only do it on the workmans comp thing, and not the CHOICE to work part time. I doubt anything bad would happen to them.
