I walked into the family room and caught the last 5 minutes of American Idol. The performer on stage was a 16 year old girl. When she was finished singing, the judges began to ask her some questions. In the course of answering the questions, the 16 year old girl began to wobble and walk toward the edge of the stage. She was so disoriented, she stepped off the stage and fell approximately 4 feet to the floor.
Now...The show ended showing the girl on the ground with a man hovering over her calling for a medic, a pictures of the girl with a 1000 mile stare, and the judges with looks of shock and horror on their faces, all with the credits rolling over the top. They then began to tease next weeks show in order to find out what happened to the injured 16 year old.
Am I getting old, or is it despicable for network TV to first - exploit a 16 year old girl with promises of fame and fortune. And second - to tease their show using her accident or possible medical condition for ratings?
You hit it. It's all about the ratings. Show has been slipping a bit in viewership. Only takes a small event but plastered all over the rapid exposure of the media monster-twitter, cable, facebook, the Hollywood news magazines etc. to generate interest over even a trivial event, not saying this is trivial what happened to the contestant. An old showbiz proverb-"Any press is good press." You can't buy this publicity. As an aside, ever notice how all the news outlets (Local/National) drag out the tried and true topics of sex, prostitution, runaways, in their investigative reports segments during Feb.? This is known as "sweeps" month when the viewership numbers are established which in turn are translated to establish what the advertising rates will be for all those commercials. Sex and sensationalism always garners high ratings. We were watching the commercials last night and a TV drama interupted them. Not surprised if someday an execution is put on HBO or pay per view.
In today's society, they would just say that if you don't like it.....don't watch it.
And that is what many folks are doing. American Idol has been losing viewership.

Idol is desperation mode, there are so many other "talent" shows out there, its diluting their product. They are running neck and neck with "the big bang theory" on Thursday nights. Steven Tyler acting like a 62 year old perv is just part of the desperation.

I agree. But I think that 'all' shows eventually 'get old'. People get bored and want something new.
House on FOX will quit after this season....which will be it's 8th.
Sometimes ya need to quit while you are ahead.
