January 17, 2012 11:08 AM Wikipedia, MoveOn, Reddit, Mozilla shuts down to protest SOPA/PIPA, how to prepare By Chenda Ngak
(CBS) - On Jan. 18, the English version of Wikipedia will go down for 24-hours to protest the U.S. anti-piracy laws - Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA). FYI, that's midnight tonight. Here's everything you need to know to prepare for tomorrow's Internet blackout.
Wikipedia's role in tomorrow's protest
Wikimedia Foundation executive director Sue Gardner made the announcement to join in the Internet blackout day started by link-sharing site Reddit on Jan. 16. The decision to shutdown was decided by the greater community that writes, edits and posts articles.
"Over the course of the past 72 hours, over 1,800 Wikipedians have joined together to discuss proposed actions that the community might wish to take against SOPA and PIPA," Wikipedia said in a press release. "This is by far the largest level of participation in a community discussion ever seen on Wikipedia, which illustrates the level of concern that Wikipedians feel about this proposed legislation."
Who else is joining the Internet blackout Jan. 18?
Wikipedia joins sites like MoveOn, Reddit, BoingBoing, Mozilla, WordPress, TwitPic and the ICanHasCheezBurger network. Google, Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr will not be joining the day of protest, however, all have expressed their stance against the bills. .................................>>>>>>>>>..........................>>>>>>>>>>>>....................http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-50.....pipa-how-to-prepare/
I think that ALL sites should shut down for 24 hours!!!

People.......if you have Time Warner as your cable provider........be aware that they are supporters of this proposed bill. It would be well advised that you all call them and tell them you will switch providers (to verizon) if they don't pull back their support. And that we will hold them responsible if it does pass!! If the politicians won't listen....the corporations who have the most to lose,($$$) clearly will!!! We're calling tomorrow.....first thing!!

Wikipedia editors question site's blackout By PETER SVENSSON AP Technology Writer
NEW YORK (AP) -- Can the world live without Wikipedia for a day? The shutdown of one of the Internet's most-visited sites is not sitting well with some of its volunteer editors, who say the protest of anti-piracy legislation could threaten the credibility of their work.
"My main concern is that it puts the organization in the role of advocacy, and that's a slippery slope," said editor Robert Lawton, a Michigan computer consultant who would prefer that the encyclopedia stick to being a neutral repository of knowledge. "Before we know it, we're blacked out because we want to save the whales."
Wikipedia's English-language site shut down at midnight Eastern Standard Time Tuesday and the organization said it would stay down for 24 hours.
Instead of encyclopedia articles, visitors to the site saw a stark black-and-white page with the message: "Imagine a world without free knowledge." It carried a link to information about the two congressional bills and details about how to reach lawmakers.
It is the first time the English site has been blacked out. Wikipedia's Italian site came down once briefly in protest to an Internet censorship bill put forward by the Berlusconi government. Millions of Americans oppose SOPA and PIPA because these bills would censor the Internet and slow economic growth in the U.S. Two bills before Congress, known as the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House, would censor the Web and impose harmful regulations on American business. Millions of Internet users and entrepreneurs already oppose SOPA and PIPA.
The Senate will begin voting on January 24th. Please let them know how you feel. Sign this petition urging Congress to vote NO on PIPA and SOPA before it is too late......https://www.google.com/landing.....65&utm_medium=oa
We called them both and told them that if they continue to support this proposed bill, or if it passes......we will be changing providers!!!!!!

Hey, even Free Pepublic, and Wing Nut Daily are on board with this, because they'll have the same boot on their throats as any other site, including this one.
The bill even affects sites like E-Bay, and Craig's list. Ironically, but not surprisingly, the republican senator that came up with this particular abomination, has been cited for illegal downloading, and violating copyright.
Your copy, paste, and pretend they're your own thoughts days could come to an end as well.
Sopa and Pipa sound like a couple female pet cats. Or some leftist single-mother college instructor's kids.
I wrote my congressman and Senators, however I have found whatever I am for, they are against so I don't know it will help.
"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
