Academic programs

Prisoners are offered both academic and vocational educational opportunities. Academically the prisoners can take programs including: Adult Basic Education, Bilingual Programs, GED classes, and Special Education Programs.

The Adult Basic Education Program focuses on inmates who are insufficient readers, and well behind on their basic math skills. This program gives the inmates the reading and math knowledge necessary for the inmates survive in modern communities.

The Bilingual Programs are designed to give inmates, who do not speak English well, the opportunity to learn English as a second language. It also has classes for those inmates who are dominate in Spanish to help prepare them for the Spanish GED.

The GED program is offered to all inmates whose reading and math scores are above the sixth grade level and do not have high school diploma. The goal of these courses is to prepare the inmate to pass the GED test. To be eligible for the GED level courses the inmate must be able to read and do math at the ninth grade level or better. If the inmates do not read and do math that well, but are still above the sixth grade level, they can take the pre-GED courses.[1]

[edit] Vocational Programs

Inmates are offered a magnitude of vocational programs that will better prepare them for working in the outside world. These Programs include: Building Maintenance, Computer Operator, Custodial Maintenance, Drafting, Electrical Trades, Floor Covering, Food Service, General Business, Masonry, Printing, Small Engine Repair, and Welding.[2]

[edit] Correctional Industries

There are two industries at Great Meadow. Metal Furniture Manufacturing, where office furniture, beds and security screens are manufactured. The other is Cleaning and Personal Care Products Manufacturing.[3]

[edit] Counseling

Counselors are available to the inmates. There are counselors for sex offenders, drug users, and mentally handicapped. The goals of these programs is to get the inmate the help he needs to function in society.[4]

Comstock is one of the worst prisons in NYS and I have put some time there when I was working in that facility. It won't be long before the cons come up with some scam to fleece money from someone using this new job.

Saves the taxpayers money and  helps train convicts with a skill that will enable them to become productive members of society  which would help reduce recidivism ------ all in all sounds like a GREAT program.

I can't wait to give them my Vehicle Identification Numbers and my SS, license and address numbers. I am sure there will be no crimes committed as a result.

You can tell by DV's post that he has never had any contact with the element that is in the prison system. As the watch commander who gave us the instructions of what to do while working inside the prisons said, these people are criminals otherwise they wouldn't be in here. Sooner or later some of them will come up with a scam to steal someones identity in order to steal some money and that will end the program.

What happened to just making license plates and other things? How about building the picnic tables that the parks have? How about those wooden garbage cans? Highway signs? Bending guard rails? That would make too much sense.

If the nayboobs bothered to read up about the program, they would have learned that the inmates participating in the program do NOT have any access to information such as social security numbers, VIN numbers, etc.  Furthermore, inmates who have been incarcerated for financial crimes and identity theft are NOT allowed to participate in the program.

Bottomline - the program saves the state taxpayers money and helps rehabilitate and train prison inmates -- it is a win-win as far as I am concerned.  Great program -- lets hope we can come up with more ways to save taxpayer money AND accomplish goals that benefit society at the same time.

The inmates participating in the program will NOT have any pertinent private information available to them. Do your OWN homework and research and then GFY..

The story was aired on several local radio and tv outlets  .. so the quick answer is I did not learn about it online nor do I have an internet link.

I listen to the news on at 4 local tv stations and 1 NYC tv station ... and on at least 4 different local radio stations.  I am not about to go back searching for which media outlet ran the story on which day.
