If you positively have your mind made up one way or the other on the issue of abortion... Watch this video:

Common Ground on Abortion? from RH Reality Check on Vimeo.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral
philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

On the surface, a great idea.. but when you dig deeper, its just another pitch for more government programs.
I'm all for free contraception using government money, but if you get involved with the caring of these children for the 50% of abortion candidates that are in poverty, where does it end? It doesn't. The public will be on the hook for these kids until they reach 18.
I'd rather encourage people that shouldn't have children because they CAN'T afford them to go the contraceptive route, or abortion if that doesn't work.

In reality, this effort will go nowhere because there is too much money and politics involved on both sides of this issue.

There is gridlock on this issue... that's what the video is about.  Finding common ground to break the gridlock and
proceed.

Like many Conservatives, you seem willing to accept abortion when faced with the alternative, which is paying
for the support of the unwanted babies.
It's about dollars, not morals.

We now live in a world where Rove V Wade is legal and unlikely to be overturned any time soon.  The real CHOICE
now seems to be, how do both sides limit the number of unwanted pregnancies.  It would seem to be a place
where both sides DO agree and should work together to reduce the need for abortion.

Conservative opposition to Planned Parenthood, limits access to birth control, which will cause an increase of
abortions.  Certainly both sides can find a way to fund birth control... a policy that helps both sides.

Incorrect assumption, Box. I am not a social conservative, in fact, I am a social moderate/liberal. I support gay rights and keeping the government out of my house as much as possible.. I am a fiscal conservative/libertarian.
So my view is entirely consistent with my beliefs. I am frankly not interested in ANOTHER government program. When the "pro-lifer" was  revealed as a democratic rep, I knew what was coming. It was going to be yet another government program that will take more of MY money...no thanks.

Here lies the problem with 'both sides'.  They BOTH(conservatives and liberals) believe the federal government is responsible for "controlling" unwanted pregnancies by using the power of the state and legislation.  The only people that can control pregnancy are those involved in the act that can get you pregnant.  The dilemma created when government gets involved to solve a problem is, the problem is never solved and usually exacerbated, because the bureaucracy created to solve the problem has no incentive to solve it because that would eliminate the need for the bureaucracy. In short, they would lose their jobs.

There will never be a day where Americans are proclaiming – “we stopped unwanted pregnancy”.  The government bureaucracies, the politicians, and the abortion industry have too much money to lose if that was no longer a national narrative.

Would you be willing to give some of YOUR money to fund Birth Control?  It would seem a worthy cause.

I love the term "abortion industry" like it's GM or Exxon!

3% of Planned Parenthood is in YOUR abortion industry... I'm sure that they could find a use for the 3% in their
group if abortions were no longer necessary.

Either way it would seem that both sides would benefit if women had access to birth control... a worthy cause for
both sides of this issue.

Yes, I would... Because it is a wise investment to prevent unwanted pregnancies, instead of supporting those unwanted children who often turn to crime because of their poverty situation, and end up in jail...costing yet more money.

Birth control and abortion are one of the few government efforts that could end up costing less in social welfare in the long run.

No government involvement in how folks use their sex organs........ just personal responsibility for controlling one's reproductive organs and being personally and financially responsible and accountable for them.

If ya wanna have sex but no kids..........pay for birth control. If ya can't afford birth control...........NO SEX!
If ya get pregnant and want an abortion..........pay for it. If ya can't afford an abortion................NO SEX!
If ya get pregnant and want to keep the kid.........pay for them! If ya can't afford the kid.............NO SEX AND ALL THE ABOVE!!!

As a Roman Catholic, I am opposed to abortion, death penalty and euthanasia across the board.  I also oppose embryonic stem cell research.

We must do everything to support a Culture of Life ---  To reduce abortions, we should teach abstinence first AND provide counseling on birth control ... we should reform adoption laws to make putting unwanted babies up for adoption a more viable alternative ...  and we should support programs (private - first - and public - as needed)  that encourage and support women in their decision to bring their babies to full term and no abort them.  Birthright is a wonderful program that assists women who have chosen LIFE for their babies over abortion -- and programs like this should be supported with our voluntary contributions.

My position is consistent with the Roman Catholic Church teaching  EXCEPT that I believe that some provision for birth control training and availability has to be considered.  In a perfect world, no couple would have sex outside of marriage (or inside marriage with no intention of having/raising a baby).   Abstinence should always be the preferred route -- but we must also be realistic because the world is not perfect.

You guys act as if America is a 3rd world country and the citizens have no access to birth control.  That is ridiculous!!  People CHOOSE not to purchase birth control.  A pack of condoms is not that much money.

When I read 55bird's posts, it sounds like he must have gotten lots of women pregnant due to lack of access to contraception and no control over sexual urges.  Or, he believes he has self control, and it's everybody else that doesn't, and is incapable of it.  And he doesn't want to pay for it.

Cicero, you couldn't be more wrong than if you read my autobiography and then purposely rotated it 180 degrees out of phase.

What am stating is my view of REALITY....All you have to do is LOOK at the single mothers giving birth to children they can't afford or don't want, and then being on their own because the fathers WALKED away.
Abortion has been legal for DECADES, and we still have the unwanted birth problem.

What I propose is the government do everything possible to prevent unwanted births, using everything at their disposal...that investment up front, will reap dividends for the women and people that would have to pay for their mistakes.

So far the world and it's 7 Billion People seem to have proved the Abstinence plan a dismal failure.

Actually --- if abstinence were actually practiced -- pregnancies would go down.

There is irrefutable evidence that if  a couple does not have sex -- they will not get pregnant.   You can not proove that any form of birth control is 100% effective at preventing pregnancy ---- but I can prove that NOT HAVING SEX is 100% effective at preventing pregnancy.

Humans are hard wired to have sex... almost like an addiction.  To prevent unwanted pregnancies, the "Abstinence
Plan" is the least successful of all options.

Much of the Catholic Church's view on birth control and abortion seem to be self conflicting.  IMO, the Church opposes
birth control because it opposes premarital sex.  Allowing birth control for married couples seems to be an
acceptable choice for the the Church... especially since 98 Percent Of Catholic Women Use Birth Control That
is  Banned By Church.
