The Environmental Protection Agency's finding that chemicals used in fracking natural gas wells are to blame for
groundwater pollution in Wyoming is likely to fuel opposition to the industry in New York state.

Findings in the Private and Public Drinking Water Wells:
EPA also updated its sampling of Pavillion area drinking water wells. Chemicals detected in the most recent
samples are consistent with those identified in earlier EPA samples and include methane, other petroleum
hydrocarbons and other chemical compounds. The presence of these compounds is consistent with migration
from areas of gas production.

The real question is can you run your car on that stuff

IMO, the real question is... how do we SAFELY extract this resource from the ground with out poisoning our water supply.

Don't know but they will either have to find a way or don't do it at all, if they screw up they should be held accountable.

Supposedly the fracking procedures that would be used in NYS are vastly different than the EPA example because of the make up of the sub soil here.

Again, no room for middle ground. The anti-frackers dismiss the possibility of safe fracking and the pro-frackers dismiss any safety concerns,

I'm not against Fracking... I'm against Fracking that pollutes our ground water.  The present system used in the west
and in surrounding areas of Pennsylvania ( I assume similar soil) are proven to pollute.  Fracking brings jobs and
clean energy... but at the price of polluted water, soil and people.

With the present technology, we are being asked to trade good drinking water for natural gas.  That trade is
unacceptable.

On this we agree..(Imagine that). I chuckle at the fracking industries commercial on Williamsport, PA, where they say "we protect wells by encasing them in concrete and steel"..oh really, how far down do you go?
You do realize that your encasing is finite in depth and these chemicals and gas leech UP...
At this point, I only support fracking when it is far away from people now and in the future.

Some have suggested that videos such as the one posted on this thread are "dramatized" and thus do not accurately reflect reality.   My instinct tells me - If fracking was as bad as the critics say it is, we'd be hearing or reading about horror stories everyday.   Therefore, I still support fracking in New York -- 1000%.

I support creating energy IN our country by as many means/sources as possible from solar to fracking.

Would you support Fracking at the expense of drinking water???  That IS the choice.

The EPA is in the process of confirming the "horrors of Fracking".  Their report:

http://yosemite.epa.gov/opa/admpress.nsf/0/ef35bd26a80d6ce3852579600065c94e?OpenDocument

According to the EPA...
In the fall of 2010, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease
Registry reviewed EPA’s data and recommended that affected well owners take several precautionary steps,
including using alternate sources of water for drinking and cooking, (They Can't Drink Their Well Water or
Cook in It)
and ventilation when showering (To Prevent Gas Explosions). Those recommendations remain in place
and Encana has been funding the provision of alternate water supplies.

I don't trust the reports of the EPA ----  you know why ??????

General Electric studies showed that dredging PCBs from the Hudson would cause an INCREASE in PCBs in surface water ---- and their studies showed that "capping" (which nature has been doing for over 30 some years) the PCBs at the bottom of the river was actually the safer way to handle the PCB problem.

The EPA did a study and said that dredging would be safe -- it would not "resuspend" PCBs in the river water ---- GUESS which study was correct ?????????????????????????????

NOT THE  EPA's -----------------   they had to shut down dredging for a year or so because so much of the PCBs had been resuspended  -- The EPA made the PCB problem WORSE  not better.

Scientists --- who are either employed by the EPA or who are contracted through grants to do studies for the EPA  have a FINANCIAL INTEREST in producing reports that allow the EPA to ask Congress for more money -- for another study or for some remediation project.    If these scientists produced reports that said -- for example in GE's case ---  GE's study is correct --- let's just leave the PCBs alone and let nature naturally cap the PCBs ----   guess what ????   EPA scientists and workers would NOT be able to justify keeping their jobs.

So EPA  produces reports that says a problem exists -- so that the EPA employees and comtractors -- keep their jobs and keep getting funding for new contracts and grants.

And guess what --- they do the same at other government agencies -----  the study will ALWAYS recommend  that the agency or department needs to  - at least -- keep the existing staff .. or hire more staff --- and -at least keep existing funding or get  more funding  because of X, Y and/or Z "problem(s).

The EPA has an agenda and often make their studies of the problem fit what they want it to be.

Very true -- as with any government entity or - for that matter - even private entity.   Humans are ALWAYS going to present information, studies/reports, etc  .. so as to be more favorable to their individual need(s)/desire(s).

As someone who has studied polling and been involved in scientific research (albeit not professionally) --- I am well aware that I  (or anyone else)  can set up a poll or set up an experiment to get the result that I want --- or I can take the data/results and word it in such a way as to send the message the way I want.

I remember a particular "study" done less than 10 years ago by a town resident (who happens to be a professor in one field but not in the field that he was writing the "study" on)  ---- he presented his "study report" to a meeting at town hall .....   everyone was impressed and believed that he had made his case.    Except for the fact that the graphs and charts and other documentation had NO correlation to the words printed in the report ------ and then afterwards .. when pressed privately .. he admitted that some of the graphs and charts   -- in his words  - "had been tweaked a bit".   BOTTOMLINE ---   that resident was no better or worse than the EPA  .............. it is very possible to THROW together charts, graphs and other "supporting documentation" and then throw in a bunch of words and put it between a fancy cover -- hand it to people -- and then tell them  "this proves my point".     Most people will not read the study -- they may just look at the fancy cover and glance at the nice charts .. but not actually read, study, fact check, etc the contents ... they'll just walk away believing that the guy or gal  "proved" his/her argument ---------------- when in fact it was a bunch of bull sh*t to buffalo enough people to get a desired response or course of action.

All  I can say is people near fracking sites who can light their tap water on fire IS compelling...
