American Airlines Files for Bankruptcy Protection
Written By Adam Samson
Published November 29, 2011

American Airlines, and its parent company AMR (AMR: 0.22, -1.40, -86.33%), filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court on Tuesday.

The company made the move to "become a more efficient, financially stronger, and competitive airline," Thomas Horton, incoming Chairman and CEO of AMR and American Airlines said in a release. As part of the transition, former Chairman and CEO Gerard Arpey will retire, and will be succeeded by Horton.

The Texas-based airline plans on "conducting normal business operations" while it restructures its debt and other obligations, it said in a release.  To that end, flights are expected to continue as normal and the reservations and customer service departments will conduct business as usual as well.

AMR is the only major airline to have not filed for bankruptcy in the past ten years, putting it at a "very substantial disadvantage" to its competitors, the company said . It also still needs to fund worker pensions, which other major carriers do not.

The decision was also influenced by "global economic uncertainty, volatile and rising fuel prices, and intensifying competitive challenges," according to the release. ...........................>>>>.........................>>>>.......................Read more: http://www.foxbusiness.com/travel/2011/11/29/american-airlines-files-for-bankruptcy/#ixzz1f6u68W00

I smell another stimulus coming. And that will only be if the government thinks American Airlines should be one of the successful businesses!!

Have no fear all the airlines that need to stimulate/keep the economy moving will survive.   They are a nescesary funtion.   They help move mail and passengers to vacation destinations/family visits.   And all these people vote and keep the taxis, parking garages at the airport functioning, the eateries, theme parks open etc.   Not to mention  fuel  for the planes.  All are tied into the big picture of economic support.    All support jobs, which allows the Pols. to be elected/re-elected.   Same with the P.O.   It has to be kept existent regardless of the $$$$$ it may lose.   It brings the Soc. Sec. checks to the seniors and the cards/letters from the relatives, for those who are not computer illiterate or the ones who care not to ever be.   Until the generations are weaned off the mail and into the Net age the P.O. has to exist.   So more fiat currency will be supplied until the conversion takes place.   Profit/loss is not a factor.   It has to exist for prev. stated reasons.   So when the total conversion to Net mail/financials takes place what then, what to do with all those unemployed P.O. employees as their layoffs through modernization continue to rise.

The seniors get direct deposit from the government
The food stamps are on cards
Welfare 'checks' are on cards

now if you want to send christmas cards/birthday cards for nostalgia go ahead....at $0.44 a piece of the pie

as for folks needing to fly....misnomer.....people WILL get to where they WANT to get to WITH or WITHOUT a plane....

are we that stupid or is it mentally lazy that we just say "okey-dokey smokey"?

American is probably the worst airline I've ridden in a LONG time. Their planes are getting old, baggage fees, short staffed on wait crew and ticketing is a nightmare, not to mention refunds/credits etc - and times sitting on tarmacs waiting for gates or takeoffs.

Let them fail by their own creation - there's plenty of others that can/will pick up the slack.  Let the customers decide!
