Schumer: Don't Track Shoppers Without Consent Footpath technology tracks shoppers' cellphones to track their movements through a mall or store By Karen Matthews | Sunday, Nov 27, 2011
Technology that uses shoppers' personal cellphones to track their movements through a mall or store should not be used without their consent, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said Sunday.
Schumer said the British company that developed the so-called footpath technology should use an opt-in mechanism to give shoppers the choice whether they want their movements tracked.
"A shopper's personal cellphone should not be used by a third party as a tracking device by retailers who are seeking to determine holiday shopping patterns," said Schumer, D-N.Y. He added, "It shouldn't be up to the consumer to turn their cellphone off when they walk into the mall to ensure they aren't being virtually tailed."
The technology was developed by Portsmouth, England-based Path Intelligence. It already has been used in shopping centers in Europe and Australia, and it was used in at least two malls in the U.S. on Black Friday.
Cleveland-based mall operator Forest City said that after conducting a trial at two of its locations on Friday it would suspend further tests in part because of Schumer's concerns.............................>>>>...................>>>>..........................http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news.....humer-134558768.html

Straight from Great Britain, the same place that brought the possibility of having a chip embedded in your child so they could be tracked "just in case." Surprised Schumer is against it, though. Gotta give him credit. |

Good advice. The corporations have already replaced Thanksgiving as a holiday with Black Friday, a giant consumer buying frenzy where people sometimes get trampled to death. What more do they want? Notice the media now mention Black Friday as if it is a real holiday, yet they won't mention a real holiday, Christmas, anymore. |

The phone still is sending out a signal that can be tracked. The only way to stop it is take the battery out. |

give the up-chuck credit? for what? changing the subject and the spin so when they vote to 'protect us' it will be built into the law to satisfy the homeland security/patriot act..... why do you think they push NYS RealID 'the easier way to get in and out of Canada'.....who needs a passport/medical insurance card....the government likes RealID.... becareful of the enemy living within..... he pretends to make the phone companies/retailers the 'enemies'......they can track what I buy any time...I dont give a rats a$$....but one thing they will learn is I do what I do because I do what I do and I choose what I choose.....I owe them NOTHING...they owe me NOTHING..... the government on the other hand is another story...... we have to ask ourselves the choice to turn off the phone/buy things we want regardless of what the carrot is before us(that's what retailers do is entice) are you strong enough to SAY NO TO STUPID SALES!!!!! really folks, this is up-chuck serving up his up-chuck on a tarnished platter....... |
