Stop pandering to construction unions

Cost overruns on the I-287 improvement project are disappointing and we applaud Gov. Cuomo’s call for reform.
New York state is facing an infrastructure crisis, and we must do more to make taxpayer construction dollars go further. We encourage the governor and Legislature to support the Public Construction Savings Act (S.4121/A.7855), which would streamline bidding and guarantee that the lowest responsible bidder gets the job regardless of labor affi liation.
Cost overruns are a big problem. However, it is a bigger problem when the state intentionally inflates the cost of projects just to benefi t construction trade unions. Witness what happened on the Exit 122 project in Orange County. The state imposed a project labor agreement (PLA) and rejected the lowest responsible bid submitted by a reputable contractor — some $4.5 million lower — only to give the job to a contractor who agreed to hire workers from the union hall. The state might as well have a bonfire on the Capitol lawn with the $4.5 million in tax dollars wasted on that project.
It is no accident that the I-287 project was governed by a costly and inefficient PLA. PLAs pander to labor unions, discourage competition and make projects more expensive for the taxpayer. If state leaders want to ensure quality work and the lowest prices for public work, they should award projects to the lowest responsible bidder and let that responsible bidder decide if a PLA will be in the best interests of the taxpaying public.

Really Buck???
How do you think Carl (love my palomino) Paladino was nominated.  Certainly not by the traditional Republican party.

The editorial writer makes the illogical leap that lowest bid = better quality work.   All one can say is that the lowest bid is the LEAST EXPENSIVE in the short run.   It is very possible that the least expensive may also be the WORST quality of work and eventually cost the taxpayers MORE money in the LONG-RUN.

Anti Union businesses are bad for NY State.

A few years back, Beech Nut corporation receive as much as $106 million in taxpayer-funded incentives to help it build its
$124 million production plant and headquarters building in Montgomery county.  That's $106 million of OUR TAX DOLLARS
to build this facility.  (Beech Nut paid an estimated $18 million dollars for the $124 million dollar plant)

Beech Nut hired (non union) Buckner Steel Erection of North Carolina, to build $3 million of it's steel work.  The building was
was completed and just beginning production, when a snow storm collapsed a portion of the building... apparently the
steel work couldn't handle the first large New York State snow load and fell apart.

Sometimes, you get what you pay for.

Ever notice that when Conservatives feel they are on the winning side of a discussion, they are polite...
but when they feel they are losing... they insult and ridicule. No doubt a Conservative value.

If I were a moron, as Buck contends, then I probably would have missed the SUBJECT OF THIS THREAD...
~  "Stop pandering to construction unions"  ~
(Note to Buck:  Construction Unions are NOT generally
"PUBLIC SECTOR UNIONS."

The Subject of this thread posts:
~ "Support the Public Construction Savings Act (S.4121/A.7855), which would streamline bidding and guarantee that
the lowest responsible bidder gets the job regardless of labor affiliation."  ~

Again, only a MORON (the kind of Moron that Buck suggests, could miss the Subject of the Thread he is Posting To.)
The PCS act concerns UNIONS, not Public Sector Unions (as poor Buck understands it) but ALL UNIONS.

So Buck... try taking your own advice and as you so polity put it:
"Try f*cking reading before commenting".[

Public sector unions and private sector unions are BOTH an extremely good thing.

Hey Box. I'll clue you in on a little secret....Shhh...I'll type it real quiet like so it's just between you and me.
It is irrelevant if a state project is done 'in house' by state workers (union or not) or 'contracted out' to private industry(union or not)...Either way you have to pay workers union wages + benifits...There is no way around it.

Now here's the difference between unions that deal with private sector and public sector.

Private Sector: Unions can negotiate right up to a point. If they cross this point, then the company can go out of business and it won't matter because everyone will be out of work...So, in essence, in the private sector, there is a system of checks and balances.

Public Sector: Unions can negotiate most anything they want and get away with it. Since the state outright takes money from the general population in the form of 'fees' and 'taxes' over the entire spectrum of income in one form or another, unions take advantage of this because they know that the state is a money faucet that can never be turned off.
