Community Service, who is serving?

Children in the state of Virginia to get a higher passing grade in English are obligated to perform 15 hours of community service. Let me take this opportunity to say I am happy to hear we still teach English in our schools & are permitted to call it English.

Community service is a wonderful thing but should it weigh in on a grade a student in English class receives? I say no. Such community service should not be mandatory. No child should be compelled to perform community service unless it is part of a sentence handed down by the court system.

Why are people on the dole (welfare) not compelled to perform community service? Why do inmates not perform community service in areas of infrastructure maintenance? Labor unions do not want community service performed by people taking from the system. It is better to see welfare people & criminals idle. Generating union jobs is what unions are about.. All paid for by the tax payer & consumer.

Politicians, teachers, public safety personnel, they should be compelled to perform community service, shoulder to shoulder with trustee's from the Department Of Corrections. Judges also.

Community Service by students is a building block of the collective. This is not the American way.

When you are volunteering for a cause you are doing so of your own choosing without any worry of punishments or rewards.

Community service usually comes with a set number of hours or days to meet a school, work or court requirement with worry ofpunishments or rewards.

For years schools have required kid to attend and or get involved in their local government and possibly attend local governmentmeetings. Actually, it expands a social network for kids. And colleges like seeing resumes where kids have been involved in some sort of community service or volunteering.

Commuunity service is a GOOD thing, whether it be required in school or from the court.

It doesn't necessarily mean working with government people but there are businesses that do accept

this kind of either volunteer service/or court decision.  The kids are with others who have committed crimes

and they learn to understand that the choices they make have consequences.... doing service without pay

teaches that consequences are not so rewarding.... They also learn (in church atmosphere, food pantries)

to give their time unselfishly is very rewarding and may lead to a career in service they were not aware of.

Community service can be volunteering in a hospital, pediatric ward, Ronald McDonald house, places

that they see life in reality....can come to an end without notice.

Community service has no political boundaries...it's better to hand out this in court than to give these kids

a slap on the hand and the parents pays the fine.....and there is no consequence.

as a person who has seen what good Community service can do, I am supporting this whether it be

mandated or not.  It shows and teaches humanity and morals and improves character.
