Joe Paterno Fired: Penn State Football Coach Removed By Board Of Trustees After Scandal (VIDEO) GENARO C. ARMAS 11/ 9/11 11:10 PM ET
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach.
The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season.
But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.
Speaking at his house to a couple of dozen students, Paterno said, "Right now, I'm not the football coach. And I've got to get used to that. After 61 years, I've got to get used to it. I appreciate it. Let me think it through."
He shook hands with many of the students, some of whom were crying.
Other students were upset. A large crowd descended on the administration building, shouting "We want Joe back!" then headed to Beaver Stadium.
One key question has been why Paterno and other top school officials didn't go to police in 2002 after being told a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower.
Paterno says he should have done more. Spanier has said he was not told the details of the attack.
I've been following this pretty closely since I listen to sports talk during the afternoon.......it's unbelievable that the students at Penn state rioted last night in support of JoePa........a real sick situation........
The 28 year old assistant coach that witnessed the crime should be not only be FIRED but brought up on criminal charges. When you see a boy being raped, you go to the police, not the head coach.
Looks like the media and the court of public opinion has destroyed the reputation of a man with an otherwise impeccable reputation and career.

Agreed, although Joe Pa, shouldn't be excused for his part.....he knew and still let Sandusky on campus as late as last year.....with kids!!!.......

I'm not sure JoePa was the decision maker on that. I would think it would be the Athletics Director or higher. The firing of JoePa was a business decision. There was no saving Joe because media had already tarred and feathered him.
Well, the press made sure that they got their piece of meat with a name and face everyone recognized. You watch, the parasites will now eat each other to get the interview of the man they pushed up the steps of the gallows.

Sorry, but Joe Pa was bigger than anybody on that campus......bigger than the school pres....some say even bigger than the gov.....he had the power to stop it.....the is a.d. gone........the school pres. is gone and now Joe Pa

It's already happening........everyone wants to hear from Joe.........ESPN supposedly is set up for the first interview...
There is more then enough blame to go around. It is clear that those 'at the top' were told and chose to do nothing. They didn't want to muddy up the college's reputation. Obviously that was more important and obviously a bad call.
Now do their lack of dealing with the issues when they became aware....the college has now set themselves up for a major law suit. Guess they haven't learned much with the catholic church scandals.
