You hypocritical dork....you began all the attacks without knowing who I am and now you cry because you get same in kind....

Correction -- actually .. I made a truthful statement about how large commercial growers pick tomatoes green - store them -- and then "ripen" them with gas.    Something which I proved to be true - and which you attacked me for making.

Buy your fresh produce DIRECT from local growers ---  don't eat the "frankenfruit" sold in supermarkets.

Exactly how does that work when the growing season ends. Just asking........hmmmm, maybe I'll do a search see if I can't find the answer myself. I'm able to answer a lot of questions that way. Ya just never know what you'll find online.....ya know.

It works this way -- the same way it worked for my grandparents -- you only buy fresh produce IN SEASON ...  some you use right away -- the rest you "put up" for the winter (pickle it, make it into sauce, etc.)

It is much healthier way to eat and is better for the environment and uses less energy.

Very selective choice of conversations DORK.....I gave you proof of facts and you attacked my credibility.  But my reference is to threads way before that when I first joined and asked you for source of some info you were spreading about....when I continued asking, you did your normal VIAL CHILDISH ATTACK on me, who you did not know and who asked a legitimate question that you could not provide support for your false comments.

Wow, only on this board could a thread reminiscing about places past, sink into being an insult contest, and a debate about fresh, versus canned produce.
By the way, how does one go about "putting up" fresh lettuce?

I gave you proof of facts, too --- and yes .. I do question your credibility since your statements do NOT jive with reality.

Fine, then
(1) Why does refrigeraton for transport of produce exist?
I've spent 32 years as a designer for CARRIER developing Transport Refrigeration Equipment. I've designed equipment specific to the needs of growers. There's REALITY! Like it or not, you fall far short of knownig anything about this topic and I would be more than happy to publicly debate you on the issue any time and any public place you want.

the existence of refrigeration does NOT disprove my statements --- the FACT is that major commercial growers of tomatoes pick them green ... store them green .. and gas them before shipment to get them to "turn red" --  this is something that is well documented and even the industry admits to

that is why I prefer to either grow my own produce or purchase it DIRECT from local farmers/producers and prefer to eat produce IN SEASON

why does it bother you so much that I prefer to grow or buy local ??? Are you so much of a  totalitarian, control freak that you need to tell other people how to live ?

I have no problem with you buying local, as I also prefer the same. The issue I have is that you continue to fail to realize that transport refrigeration is intended to "delay" the ripening process. Growers DO NOT want them to "turn red" befoe they ship. With proper temperature monitoring dependant on the produce being shipped, the ripening process is slowed from the time they are picked to the time they are delivered. If the grower were to gas the produce beofre loading for shipping across the states, they would reach maturity much quicker and have a shorter shelf life.
