Her body of work is immense. She, Anita O'Day (A REAL JAZZ SINGER), and Ella are my favorite female singers, She was Sinatra's FWB for a number of years. A regular Saturday night date at his compound when he couldn't line up anyone "more interesting," according to his long time valet! Apparently he didn't date her publicly because of her large thighs and less than ideal figure, but when he couldn't get a new date on Saturday he would tell George "Please call up Miss Lee and invite her for dinner." I think he really appreciated her musicality as well. Quite a swingin' singer for a Scandinavian girl from North Dakotaaaahhh...True!

Glenn Miller was the equivalent of that day's Elton John. His band was extremely popular and widespread but hardly avant-garde, He sure knew how to make hits too. He will always be remembered and revered for his heroism and his death over the English Channel is his deep desire to serve as Army Airforce Bandleader doing his part to entertain the troops. As for pure musicality it is kind of tough to beat Artie Shaw and for something a little more "black" in a white band and more avant-garde you would have to listen to Mr. Betty Grable aka Harry James!
