EPIC injustice on state drug plan for elderly
Re Aug. 19 article, “State changes senior drug plan”: It is amazing how the state of New York can spend millions of dollars building roundabouts to accommodate the chip plant located in Luther Forest. This plant is mainly owned by an Abu Dhabi group that has plants all over the world. Why should the taxpayers of New York state accommodate these people? This year the state has seen fit to change the EPIC (Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage) program, which helped many of us seniors with our prescription drugs. They are forcing seniors to have a Part D plan. In May, I received a letter saying, “Good news from EPIC! You have reached your annual deductible. This means you will automatically receive the following discounts at the pharmacy.” Well, this did not happen. In July, I received a letter from EPIC saying, “We are pleased to inform you that EPIC is now paying $38.69 towards your monthly Part D premium to MVP Gold Rx.” The August letter from EPIC states, “Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, the New York State EPIC program will no longer be Creditable Coverage (primary coverage) for members. This means that EPIC benefits are not as generous as Medicare Part D. If you are not enrolled in a Medicare Part D drug plan or other prescription insurance after Dec. 31, you will not have any prescription coverage. If you have a lapse in prescription coverage for more than 64 days, your monthly premium may increase by at least 1 percent for every month that you don’t have coverage and will remain at that level even when you do get new coverage.” What a rip-off for people who only had EPIC coverage! New York state law requires that EPIC seniors be enrolled in a Medicare Part D drug plan to receive EPIC benefi ts. The state has no problem fi nancing useless roundabouts to accommodate a foreign entity and has no problem limiting aid for seniors.

It's depressing watching a person write into the newspaper crying out in anger, because the government coerced him into paying his hard earned money into the government system his whole life, on promises of some utopian medical system, and now, toward the end of his life, he is now realizing the government isn't providing him with the level of service he was expecting. The gov say they will pay the drug insurance companies premiums but which drug company and plan will the person be assigned to? Bet it is some company with an "in" with government. The quality of which will suck big time.
Just like at the patches for quitting smoking. The ones NY pays for will not stay on so they suggest you find a way to tape it to your skin. I called about this waste of state funds for something that is no good and got nowhere. Bet the company they chose has an "in" with the state here too.
Then consider each Medicare D drug plan has different co-pays. Some meds have a co-pay of $85 dollars with certain insurance medications plans. Wait till the seniors get hit with that. |
