Rotterdam Junction passed test with flood

    “Give the pain a purpose” is a quote I came across very recently. Not long after, all of us living in Rotterdam Junction came across something else: Irene!
    I want to commend to the highest our volunteer fi re department. From the very start, they handled an unprecedented situation with calm, sound, organized direction. They managed to get some 400 of us to higher ground using many of their own vehicles. We then traveled via small boats to dry land and boarded buses to either Schalmont or Schenectady senior center, which served as shelters.
    Some of us were scared and some confused, but surely we all were concerned. These men and women had great compassion for everyone and kept us informed the best they could, always reassuring us we would all get out. We are also grateful for the Rotterdam police officers who were there to help, direct and calm us all.
    My husband and I arrived back home the next day via taxi cab and were completely shocked at the surreal sights we witnessed. Our little town was unrecognizable. We walked with many other residents down the middle of Main Street in silent disbelief.
    Well, the next day the shock was less but the painful reality set in and the work began. What has occurred since the storm’s passing has given purpose for the pain. We have come together as never before. We realize just how much we mean to each other: friend, neighbor and stranger. We realize how powerful teamwork can be. We know how valuable it is to have the neighbors we do. We understand we cannot get through this life alone. We need each other.
    Above all, I think I speak for every person in town when I say our Rotterdam Junction volunteer fi re department is the best. The men and women worked tirelessly and selfl essly 24/7 to overcome the painful destruction we have suffered.
    I have lived in Rotterdam Junction for 61 years and have never been more proud of my town. Experiencing the massive cooperation of the past week, I am confident that our town will be up and running sooner than expected.
    God bless us one and all

I am not an "official" -- just a private citizen and concerned resident.  

The most important thing in my mind is trying to help the people in the junction and other impacted areas get back on their feet and restored to some sense of normal.

I was at Tops Diner today and ran into some folks from Middleburgh and Schoharie - whose homes were damaged by the floods - that are now living in Rotterdam --- my first thoughts are thank God that no one was killed or seriously injured between the hurricane and tropical storm, the tornado and the flooding -- my second thought is that there is a real sense of extended community with many individuals and organizations stepping to theplate to help out  -- and my third thought  is that it will take months and possibly years to completely recover from this cataclysmic confluence of natural disasters.  

But I am convinced that we will overcome and that our communities will be stronger and better as a result.
