There are a number of jobs held by "political appointees" at the federal, state and local levels of government. It is common practice for these to people to be replaced when a new administration takes office ---- definitely when control of the office changes from one party to the other ... and almost as common when the office changes hands but remains in the same party  (example .. when Mario Cuomo succeeded Hugh Carey in 1983).

There is NEVER a guarantee that a "political appointee" will hold the office for years -- they serve "at the pleasure" of the office holder appointing them and can be let go DURING the term of office of the officeholder just as easily as they can be replaced when the officeholder is succeeded by a new person.

Long story short - obviously the poster who started this diversion from the actual topic of this thread is a disgruntled former state political appointee .... someone who got his/her job when some other political appointee was laid off to make way for him or her.     That is the way it works in government ...  grow up and get over it.

Once again you prove you can't comprehend the English language. IT WAS NOT ONE OF THE POLITICAL POSITIONS....you don't take exams for those jobs DUMBA$$. This is how you spew falsehoods and lies all the time, professing to know when you don't. You get over it and try reading posts instead of blowing smoke with your replies.

You are the one spewing falsehoods -- you claim that Hugh Carey laid you off on his 2nd day in office -- and since the only folks who lost jobs on the 2nd day he was in office were political appointees  --- > you were either a political appointee who got axed or you are a liar ... plain and simple.

Either way - I am through discussing the point - since it has nothing to do with the actual thread.

My memories of Hugh Carey are fond ones.  On those occasions that I actually met him (and there were a few), he came across as a very down-to-earth man ...  he was not one of the "stuffed shirts - I am too good to talk to you politicians" -- like some that I have met.     In particular, I contrast him with Eliot Spitzer who really came across as an arrogant s.o.b. when I met him .. and thus I voted for his opponent in the Gubernatorial contest in 2006.

Post #3 in this thread I said "...after he was sworn in"
Post #5 in this thread I stated "I was not a political appointee and I was laid off....he cut jobs."
Post #12 in this thread I said "CORRECTION:
I must apologize if I may be wrong on "when" the layoffs happened.  I cannot find my records, so to say it was days after his election would be questionable.  I honestly cannot pinpoint when they happened, other than they happened!"
Post #25 in this thread YOU SAID " the fact is that Governor Carey did NOT lay off state workers on his 2nd day in office"....your words, NOT MINE
Post #28 in this thread I stated "Not registered with either party.  I took the exam and qualifed 1st for open position,6 months later was interviewed, made an offer and accepted"

Political appointees didn't take exams.
I was not registered for either party
The position I had would never have been a political apointment becuase it was not not that kind of job
If I had been a Political appointee I have no problem saying so, but that was not the case.
You said 2nd day, I said after his election and later stated I couldn't say exactly when the layoffs were.

Now there are all the facts that I stated so go ahead and twist, spin and fabricate all the BS you want.

HAVE A NICE DAY!!!!!

I care -- so I started the thread -- you folks talk on and on about dead issues for months and years -- so I am allowed to talk about a deceased former governor for at least a month or so.

This is getting laughable. He was a one term Gov better known for his drunken stupors than anything else. Yeah he was better than Spitzer or Patterson. How low can yous DEM lower the bar? Stop building him up into another Al Smith. There's a reason Al Smith has a huge office building and Hugh Carey has nada.

The governors who lay off state workers cut the lowest paid civil service positions first, without regard to party affiliation. Cuomo did it, I think Carey did also but I will have to look it up to get exact details. Many times the newspapers will give the impression that it is the political appointees that are going but I know for fact that Mario Cuomo and Pataki both kept on appointees from the opposite party while laying off the lower level civil service items.
Mario even tried to give his jerky son a highly paid appointment while floorwashers in hospitals were let go. I heard from a republican official who was around at that time that Carey did get rid of some appointees when he came in, but often that is just a token gesture for the press.
I will check records because I understand fact and propaganda and how to tell the difference.

BE VERY CAREFUL!   DMOR has done extensive research and will call you a liar because you have provided no proof of your claim and he is the all knowing expert of all to be known!!!!

You better check your facts -- Hugh Carey was elected to and served  TWO - 4 year terms.

For your information ---  the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel was renamed the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel.

Once again, your ignorance is showing.

Political appointees and Civil Service employees are not the same thing --- so you are comparing apples and oranges.

I don't dispute your statement that some political appointees are held over by the new administration.

Hugh Carey brought in a lot of his own people --- Republicans and Democrats --- to fill the political appointments that he made when coming into office.    In remembering Governor Carey, Republicans praised Carey for having a bi-partisan blend of appointments --- since Carey had not been the endorsed Democratic candidate but won the nomination at the Primary (in 1974)  .. he felt free to appoint the best and the brightest regardless of the appointee's political persuasion.

I know this to be the case since my college room mate's father had been a die hard Republican who worked for Rockefeller .. got axed by Governor Malcolm Wilson and brought back in by Governor Hugh Carey.  He continued to serve 8 years under Carey and was kept on in his politically appointed job by Mario Cuomo for a number of years.
