Perhaps had this been the case for our grandparents we wouldn't have had so many baby boomers right now getting old and screwing up the system with their numbers
When the following generation is smaller than the previous, we will instead burden the federal, state, and local governments with our elderly.
Whats the point of making sure we have a larger generation when a good portion of them will be on some type of public assistance anyway? It's like buying horses to buy horses regardless if they can do any work. You still have to house and feed the ones who can't work.

I feel so guilty about being a baby boomer and at some point being a burden on our society, that I've decided to make some life-style changes.
1. I'm taking up smoking again. Not sure how many years I can knock off, but considering my age (64) I'm sure it'll be a significant number. 2. I bought an industrial fryer. I will only eat foods fryed in bacon fat, lard or transfat. Deep fried eggs. Mmmmm! 3. Instead of a daily morning walk, I'll be dressing in black and running with scissors at night. Quite possibly a drunk, cell phone using, texting while driving Gen-xer will solve the problem. 4. I've cancelled my health insurance. Who needs it. 5. I've instructed my family, that when I can no longer speak and need medical attention to not seek it. The sooner this old boomer leaves this earth the better for all involved. 6.I've dug a hole in the Adirondacks which my family can use to dispose of my remains. If I'm still alive, but near death then I've made arrangements to be driven there and will wait for death like the Native Americans did. 7.In the event I live 'til Jan. 2013, then as soon as Ron Paul is sworn in and implements his drug policy, I'll be off to the pharmacy to pick up a package of china white and some meth which should do the job. 8.If for some reason Ron Paul isn't elected then I'll be implementing what we used to call the K-Mart retirement plan.....a six pack and a box of shotgun shells.
So if any other boomers out there are feeling the same profound guilt that I am, than be sure to follow my lead.

I never said larger, but at least equivalent to the prior. But certainly a policy of chemical castration by the way of free birth control will reduce the birth rate. Based on history, between the 19th and 20th century in Western Civilization, the birth rate and life expectancy dramatically increased, and along with that came great technological advancement and a better quality of life. There was no catastrophic strain on society or famine.
55, I think your analysis is misguided. Horses much like humans are born to work and be productive. If you put a horse out to pasture shortly after it is born, and feed it, and never ask it to run, then you will have a horse that doesn't run. This is the same with human beings. When society doesn't expect people to work, then you perpetuate this idea that people born by those on welfare are genetically predisposition to have the same work ethic, and then put a bureaucracy in place that fosters this behavior – guess what – you just trained them not to work. And the cycle continues.
Humans aren’t born lazy and desiring to get on welfare, they are trained and rewarded by welfare for being lazy. Pavlov's Dog.

I have a better idea. Instead of no co pays for birth control, we can increase the number of abortions performed in the U.S. and create a market for the discarded fetuses by making a life tonic out of the remains, then sell them to the boomers and they can suck the rest of the life out of them in the quest for immortality. Then, we can tax the fetuses and that will pay for the Medicare and Social Security for this generation that is living longer due to the fetus tonic. So that way, we can continue to reduce the number of each generation, but yet, get some economic productivity and generate some tax revenue from the fetuses. Then we can start adding abortions to the GDP number.

I see your point, but IMHO, the horses have left the barn. Gov't assistance is here to stay..it stays as long as you have a dependency class who has the right to vote. We can reduce the amount spent on government assistance by spending a little up front to limit the amount of people can could possibly be eligible for it.
