Harvard Researchers Want Fat Kids Taken from Their Homes By John Hudson Updated: July 13, 2011 | 12:59 p.m. July 13, 2011 | 12:10 a.m.
As the Western world gets fatter and fatter, the solutions to slimming it down get ever more draconian. In Britain yesterday, the government issued guidelines saying "children under the age of 5, including babies who can’t walk yet, should exercise every day." Today, in the States, a pair of Harvard scholars writing in the Journal of the American Medical Association advocate stripping away the custody rights of parents of super obese children. They're for real! From National Journal:
"Despite the discomfort posed by state intervention, it may sometimes be necessary to protect a child," said Lindsey Murtagh, a lawyer and researcher at Harvard's School of Public Health. The study's co-author, David Ludwig, says taking away peoples' children "ideally will support not just the child but the whole family, with the goal of reuniting child and family as soon as possible." Ludwig, an obesity specialist at Harvard-affiliated Children's Hospital, said his eureka moment was when a 90-pound, 3-year-old girl entered his obesity clinic a number of years ago," reports Lindsey Tanner at the Associated Press..................>>>>...................>>>>.............................http://www.nationaljournal.com.....their-homes-20110713

And NOOOOOO- I wasn't going to say that this is the reason Ron lives with his Aunts! I am no featherweight myself.

While I agree that in extreme cases, someone should step in. I dont believe the kids should be removed from the home though. I think that the whole family should be put through a process with a dietician and fitness program. But I think this should only fall in with extreme cases. There are a lot of kids out there that are chubby. But there are a lot that are obese. There is a difference. My own child has some chubby belly but shes in for a growth spurt. I once worked with a family where the two kids were unbelievably over weight. But then meeting the parents, I could see why. This family was then sent to a doctor for information on diet and what was referred to them as "family play time". Over the course of a year, I saw a nice change in the whole family. They all lost a bit of weight and they all eat more healthy meals.
There are some parents that over indulge in their kids because the kids make demands and run the house. Parents give in to shut the kid up. These are the ones that this program would benefit. Then there are families that really just dont know how to eat and control a healthy diet. They only know what their parents fed them.
All in all, I dont think it would benefit anyone to remove a child without getting the WHOLE family help first.
Oh and I am always glad to pay for it too. Maybe they can spend my tax money teaching them the proper way to wipe their as$es too!
