I was out metal detecting today at Collins Park minding my own business when a cop comes rolling through the field. I knew when I seen him coming towards me he was going to give me trouble, sure enough he stops and says "you know you can't do that here right" like I was ruining the park or something. I told him this was a public park was it not, he started to say something but I didn't hear what he was saying I turned around and just walked away from him.
What pisses me off is I always treat that park with respect, I probably cleaned up more litter in that park than the city workers have. Every time I get done digging a plug I refill it perfectly and nobody would ever know I dug a hole. I'm assuming this cop was thinking I was destroying the grass but here he is driving a 2 ton vehicle right through the field
After I got home I checked the rules in the parks and recreations section, sure enough not anything wrong with metal detecting in that park. I plan on writing the head of the parks and recreations service tomorrow in hopes he can send me something in writing. Next time a cop has nothing better to do than to harass someone enjoying their hobby I can keep that letter with me to show them.

Is it possible someone called them? I wouldn't have walked away until I resolved the issue with the Police and cleared up any issue about what I was doing.
JUST BECAUSE SISSY SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO...BUT HE THINKS IT DOES!!!!! JUST BECAUSE MC1 SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO!!!!!

It is possible that someone called although I had the whole field to myself pretty much. Even if that was the case the cop should know the law before telling someone they're breaking them. The only area where you can not dig is on the bicycle path and that is for obvious reasons, other than that there is no rules against metal detecting in the park.
I had to walk away though because I was pissed off, not to mention some cops don't like being told the law or questioning their authority. Even though I was right it might have not been worth it to argue with the cop. Once I get the paper showing I have the right to detect there then I will stand my ground if ever confronted again.

Your correct Henry that the rules in Scotia state that the only "recreation" not allowed in the parks are golfing, flying hobby aircraft and shooting bow and arrows. (which would make sense as someone could get hurt) You were "lucky" enough to get one of the cops with a swelled head who was probably bored just driving around with no one to reprimand.
Sooooooooooo...how was your luck with the metal detector?

If you want to detect on private property, then be sure you get written permission from the landowner.
For metal detecting in New York, town, village and city parks, you'll need to check with those local officials.
For metal detecting in New York State parks and their beaches, you need to check with each parks division. Special permits are needed if you plan to detect any areas outside of the beaches.

There are some people that metal detect , dig large holes and don't fill them in. And then there are people like Henry who respect the land and do it the right way. Shame that people who have no respect ruin it for those who do. I also metal detect occasionally and there is a way to "dig" the hole and replace it like Henry said where you can't even tell the land has been touched.

Not to good today since I wasn't out long, I pulled 3 wheat cents along with some newer change. I dug 3 silvers over the weekend there, 1 pre-65 quarter and 2 dimes. You would be amazed how fast and deep coins sink into the ground, I will get a good reading showing a coin at 8-10 inches down only to pull out a penny from 1975 It is a fun hobby though, you get paid to exercise so you can't beat that
