The nation's jobless rate rose slightly to 9.1 percent in May as employers didn't add as many jobs as analysts expected.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday there were 54,000 jobs added in May, below consensus estimates as late as last week that expected an increase of 190,000. And it was well below April's increase of 232,000 jobs.
There were 13.9 million unemployed people in May, up 200,000 from last month. The long-term unemployed, out of work for 27 weeks or more, rose 361,000 to 6.2 million.
