WHO: Cell phone use can increase possible cancer risk By Danielle Dellorto, CNN May 31, 2011 1:49 p.m. EDT

The agency now lists mobile phone use in the same "carcinogenic hazard" category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform. Before its announcement Tuesday, WHO had assured consumers that no adverse health effects had been established. A team of 31 scientists from 14 countries, including the United States, made the decision after reviewing peer-reviewed studies on cell phone safety. The team found enough evidence to categorize personal exposure as "possibly carcinogenic to humans." What that means is they found some evidence of increase in glioma and acoustic neuroma brain cancer for mobile phone users, but have not been able to draw conclusions for other types of cancers "The biggest problem we have is that we know most environmental factors take several decades of exposure before we really see the consequences," said Dr. Keith Black, chairman of neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angele The type of radiation coming out of a cell phone is called non-ionizing. It is not like an X-ray, but more like a very low-powered microwave oven. "What microwave radiation does in most simplistic terms is similar to what happens to food in microwaves, essentially cooking the brain," Black said. "So in addition to leading to a development of cancer and tumors, there could be a whole host of other effects like cognitive memory function, since the memory temporal lobes are where we hold our cell phones.".......................>>>>..........................>>>>...................http://www.cnn.com/2011/HEALTH/05/31/who.cell.phones/index.html

This statement was put out with NO research to back it up.. it was done with a purpose however, it will force the funding of research. The WHO is just like any other organization, all about MONEY.

Yes the studies aren't thorough or long enough, double blind etc. so the cell phones are put in the same category as lead, engine exhaust chloroform and COFFEE- your still drinking coffee right ?

Somebody puts Chloroform in his coffee???
There are still Americans who doubt that cigarette smoke causes cancer... and still Americans who believe that Obama was born in Kenya... but not reasonable, intelligent Americans.

The junk science is that SECOND HAND SMOKE causes cancer...And most intelligent honest scientist will tell you there is not enough irrefutable evidence saying that it does...But, you can persuade a scientist to taylor the results of scientific studies to fit the agenda of the politicians that hand out the federal grant money that pays the scientists salary. Like banning baby bottles with certain chemicals, or banning trans fats, or banning SMOKING in PRIVATELY OWNED businesses, or the mother of all lies and scientific collusion - GLOBAL WARMING. Our elected masters will stop at nothing to take control of your life and body. But...As long as the politician has a (D) next to his/her name Box will do whatever they say is best for him. For Box, he is not to question WHY, but rather just to DO and DIE...Baaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I dont think its a control issue- the blackberry users manual suggest you keep the phone one inch away from your body- sure it only emits a low dose of micro wave, but I would watch out about keeping it in your pocket ALL DAY next to your gonads or culo - I wouldnt over think this one.

If I thought a manufacturer warning would be as far as it goes, and individuals chose whether they wanted to use the device regardless of possible negative effects, then I agree with you, I'm over thinking it. But since things like trans fats, smoking, all started as warnings, it wasn't long until a politician took the choice away from the individual, and instead wanted to BAN these things. It will only be time now that the information is out, that people that LOVE government control will begin questioning parents that furnish their children with cell phones, and whether a child under the age of 18 should be carrying a CANCER CAUSING cell phone. That just seems to be the natural progression in American, and especially in New York State.

Maybe the warning in the Blackberrys users manual To keep your phonr at least .98 inches away from your body should be in boldface capital letters ?.. And maybe put in on your receipt right above where you sign your name -
In a lighter vein. Years ago Johnny Carson in one of his jokes in his opening monologue said the following: " Did you hear that riding a skateboard was a cause for cancer, but they weren't 100% sure as the lab techs. were having a hard time keeping the laboratory test mice on the skateboard".
Those smart enough to limit cell phone use, will lessen their chance of brain cancer... Those too dense to consider that cell phone use may give them brain damage, have very little to lose.

Most of these "phones" are internet devices that are on ALL the time, checking for emails, running weather apps, etc. When they are transmitting to check for messages etc, they are emitting radiation. So, if you have a phone in your pocket, or on your belt, it isn't as bad as having next to your head, but it is still radiating into your body.

Granite countertops will give you cancer too. We need a regulation to address this. Susan Savage, Angelo Santabarbara, I urge you to propose a regulation banning granite countertops anywhere children under the age of 18 may come into contact with such a toxic mineral. Though there is no definitive proof it DOES cause cancer, as a precautionary measure, I believe it would be the best interest of our county legislators to pass a law banning granite countertops from being installed in public places, as it MAY be a public health risk.
Living CAN cause cancer, and there IS definitive proof that it does... what do we do now?
