Eric Cantor On 'Face The Nation': Disaster Relief For Joplin Tornado Victims Must Be Offset
First Posted: 05/30/11 08:56 AM ET Updated: 05/30/11 01:07 PM ET

On Sunday, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) reiterated his position that disaster relief funds for the tornado victims in Joplin, Missouri must be paid for with cuts to other programs. "Congress will find the money," Cantor said on CBS' “Face the Nation” "And it will be offset."

"I know that America is just stunned by the scope of devastation and loss and the horrific tragedy that the people of Joplin and other places across the country really are experiencing this tornado season," Cantor said. The federal government typically pays for disaster relief, but Cantor has said repeatedly that the government must maintain fiscal discipline. On Sunday, he compared the situation to that of a family putting off buying a new car when a family member became ill.
"When a family is struck with tragedy -- like the family of Joplin ... let's say if they had $10,000 set aside to do something else with, to buy a new car ... and then they were struck with a sick member of the family or something, and needed to take that money to apply it to that, that's what they would do, because families don't have unlimited money. And, really, neither does the federal government."..........................>>>>...................>>>>.................................http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/30/eric-cantor-on-face-the-n_n_868700.html

what do you do when your car needs a major repair? Do you just charge it and hope to pay it off "someday" or do you adjust your budget by eliminating or reducing other non-essential items to cover the cost?

If you're the federal government, you just print more money.

Joplin was NOT the pawn that should have been used to make a compromise on cutting spending. although Cantor has his points, it should have never been made at the expense of the joplin tornado victims......not when we are giving billions of aide to foreign countries for political or practical purposes.

Not good timing on Cantor's part. IMHO

Cantor didn't say to refuse giving money to Joplin just to make changes to recover the money later through budget reductions in the future. 55Tbird is correct if it were our personal budget and we had to make a major repair we would cut our spending from other areas to pay off the expense.

A personal budget???

If the Federal govt were a personal budget, we wouldn't have cut our main source of income (the Bush Tax Cuts) at a time when our expenses were increasing to pay for two wars.

Borrowing to finance an unnecessary war in Iraq was acceptable... but  rebuilding Joplin isn't... Republican Values!

we could cut costs by not  paying for deadbeat adult family members and illegal immigrants who decided to live in our house without our permission.

Those would be the wars the Obama was going to end as soon as he entered office, right? The names of the troop brigades have only been changed to protect the liars.

Failure...Along with cutting the deficit in half, closing gitmo, putting all bills online 3 days before signing...etc
According to Obama, we are out of Iraq in a combat form..but there's 50,000 troops left as "advisers" LOL, that's a lot of advisers.

Obama promised (and kept his promise) to withdraw all US combat forces from Iraq in 16 months.
The result:
(US Military Fatalities By Year)
Year     US
2003     486
2004     849
2005     846
2006     822
2007     904
2008     314
2009     149
2010  60
2011  24
Total     4454

God Bless Barack Hussein Obama!

The current war in Libya was started by your Democratic President.  How are military operations in Libya being funded?
And, to ask a question posed by the Democrats during the Bush presidency, what are the mission, the success criteria
and the timeline for ending the operations?

Unlike the war in Iraq, the war in Libya is a NATO operation with US troops participating... not a US war against Libya.

The mission, success and timeline are a NATO decision.  The US can withdraw from the operation at any time it chooses.

It's now September, but be sure to check back then, it will probably change
