Patriot Act Extension Signed By Obama
JIM ABRAMS   05/27/11 06:36 AM ET

WASHINGTON — Congress on Thursday passed a four-year extension of post-Sept. 11 powers to search records and conduct roving wiretaps in pursuit of terrorists. Votes taken in rapid succession in the Senate and House came after lawmakers rejected attempts to temper the law enforcement powers to ensure that individual liberties are not abused.

Following the 250-153 evening vote in the House, the legislation to renew three terrorism-fighting authorities headed for the president's signature with only hours to go before the provisions expire at midnight.

With Obama currently in France, the White House said the president would use an autopen machine that holds a pen and signs his actual signature. It is only used with proper authorization of the president. Minutes before the midnight deadline, the White House said Obama had signed the bill.

Obama said he was pleased the act had been extended.

"It's an important tool for us to continue dealing with an ongoing terrorist threat," he said after a meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

A short-term expiration would not interrupt ongoing operations but would bar the government from seeking warrants for new investigations.............................>>>>...........................>>>>.....................http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/27/patriot-act-extension-signed-obama-autopen_n_867851.html

He's keeping us safe from terrorists.  Thank goodness Democrats don't use FEAR to take away liberty like those darn Republicans.  Where are the liberals claiming fear mongering?  Bin Laden's dead, why the warrantless/roaming wire taps?  More change you can believe in.  Roving wiretapping for 4 more years making it a total of 14 years. Yay!!!

Warrantless wiretapping will expire as soon as the NYS Thruway becomes a toll free road.  Remember that lie?

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

Maybe this is why our government suddenly discovered bin Ladin wasn't living in a cave in Afghanistan after all. "See? The "War on Terror" is working!
Better extend that Patriot Act without a fuss!" Sadly many Americans buy into this. Our government is taking control of every aspect of our lives, and we are paying them to do it.

I agree MX...I used to be one of them until I found out a lot more about it.

I wonder how many people know that the Patriot Act was written before 9/11 and then ceremonioulsy signed into law by Bush...to
great fanfare....no wonder the red flags were hidden from the public...especially the one bearing the would be "hijackers" who only
wanted to learn to fly airplanes...not take off or land...just fly...while Bush was wining and dining the Bin Laden family.

Senders is right...they all dance to the same tune of destroying our great nation and everything it has ever stood for.

Gadfly is correct, the Patriot Act is not as new as some think, different versions were attempted to be passed before 9/11 only to be found unconstitutional. The version passed after 9/11 was not read by even one member of the house, a new version was typed up and handed out to them one hour before the vote came up making it impossible for anyone to read. While some voted against it, it sadly passed without anyone knowing what they just did to our liberties and constitution.
