Tedisco: Suspend fuel taxes during holiday weekends BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter
Two state legislators want to cut state taxes on motor fuel by 33 cents during three major holidays this summer and also create a fund to spur development of alternative fuel sources. Assemblyman James Tedisco, RGlenville, and state Sen. Greg Ball, R-Patterson, proposed the legislation Monday. “This is a win, win, win. If you get people to travel across the state, they will stop and shop and visit small businesses,” Tedisco said. “We will attract people from other states to visit us and this will say New York state is really open for business.” Assembly Majority Leader Ron Canestrari, D-Cohoes, called the proposed legislation unsound public policy. “Speaking for myself, we passed a budget and eliminated the deficit. This would create another hole in the budget and that is something we do not need,” he said. “The sponsors have hit a chord with the voters, but we must to the best of our ability enact legislation that represents good policy,” Canestrari said. Eric Stigberg, spokesman for AAA Northway, said a 33-cent price cut “would not have a signifi cant impact” on travel. He said gas price would have to drop almost a dollar to spur more driving. “We started getting calls from people about changing travel plans when gas hit $3.50 per gallon,” he said. “Based on what we are seeing, people are starting to rethink their travel plans. They are not canceling, but they are not driving as far. They are staying closer to home or finding cheaper sleeping and eating accommodations.” ......................>>>>.........................>>>>.....................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01000&AppName=1

3 weekends are you kidding me, it would be worth paying extra just to avoid the lines on those weekends. How about making the tax cut permanent to help out the people of the state.

OK.. I will explain it for you with simple math .. removing the tax will LOWER the price approximately 33 cents... lower is the right direction for the prices to go
taxes on gas ..make up the bulk of the price that we pay for each gallon .. so anytime they take the tax off is a good thing .. permanently would be even better

Thank you. I thought DVR was trying to be witty with his support for this nonsense. Out of staters where gas prices are 40-50 cent a gallon less {because of lower State taxes} will flock here on these 3 weekends? lol. If you are serious cut the highest gas taxes in the Nation everyday.
I did say that taking the tax of permanently would be even better. But taking the tax off - even for 3 holiday weekends - would be a STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
Obviously, the tea-party "goons" who post here don't bother to actually read or, if they read, they can't comprehend simple English words ... basically .. you numb skulls attack anything I post BEFORE you actually read what I posted.

If you like crumbs licked up from under 'the kings' table at his feet, then be my guest. If this tickles you to vote....be my guest.....
I want a steak....not some moldy crumbs from a politician, so that I have enough energy to walk/bike my a$$ to the voting booth and pick him....
it's a joke and a very small carrot at best to keep the plebs marching along

A very small carrot that has no chance of ever being enacted. We don't need no gas tax holiday. We need permanent cuts in the highest gas taxes in the Nation. It's a cheap publicity stunt that distracts from real action.
