Ticks???

Ever since the first post on "ticks"... I've heard this song:

philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

Gemini-I checked the rest of my bod as much as possible and dont see anymore, the only place I can't see is where I was sitting on the grass : )
Alleycat-glad your friend treated right away!

DVOR - why can't you be serious as I was asking a serious question?  I am still somewhat worried as my brother had Lyme, he didnt know he had the tick until he developed the rash , he went to the dr and tested postitive and they started the antiobiotics but he was allready feeling pretty ill and he never complains when he is sick. He had a severe headache and joint pain etc. Thankfully the antiobiotics worked and he is doing fine.

I am serious .. MC is a lunatic.

As for the other ticks,  I have seen a few .. though not yet this year.

The ticks are out and active as I too had to remove one yesterday after working in the yard. It's time to break out the insect sprayer and eliminate them.

The ticks and Lyme disease are a growing threat. A friend of mine is treating his dog for this illness. I wish our health department could maybe focus on stuff like this and forget about keeping us from having soda or going in to a McDonald's. They tried to force flu vaccine on those who didn't want it, where is the Lyme vaccine for those who do want it? You get told to tuck your pants in your socks, spray yourself with chemicals like DEET, and check yourself for ticks. They want to micro-manage your health on the one hand, and in the face of a serious threat to your health on the other hand, you are on your own. I'm glad I don't have any small children any more, who would maybe need to GO OUTSIDE sometimes.
Sorry for the ranting nature of this post. I have seasonal allergy issues this time of year which I can't seem to get a handle on, which make me more cross than usual.

Shadow glad you saw it right away and removed it !

Madam X couldn't agree with you more.

Thinking back when I was a kid MANY years ago, went to girl scout camp, hiked in mountains, went camping and NEVER had to worry about lyme disease/ticks or mosquitos only that we were itchy. So what has changed???

Since my tick incident I check my grandson when I bring him in from his backyard, never did that before.

I always check myself in a full size mirror. I spend a lot of time outside and I have a camp in the mountains.  We are always out in the woods there.  Years ago, I had two dogs.  One went to live with my then exboyfriend and the other stayed with me.  He lives up in the mountains and the dog always had ticks.  Mine never did.  When he had to travel for work, he would drop his dog off with me and sure enough, I would spend time pulling ticks.  I hated doing it. Since we still used the same vet and my name was still on the records, I took the dog for a dip at the vet and he was given stuff to keep the ticks off.  I kept this up for a few years along with my ex.  Both of our dogs lived the rest of their happy lives tick and flea free.

I also spend time hiking the trails in Thacher Park.  I make sure to check myself and my daughter before even getting back in the car.  They can get on clothes and hop off on the seats.  They can live for a long time before hopping back on your body and causing problems.  Another thing to try is a garlic pill.  My mom takes them for health reasons and she never has bugs near her.  We can sit on the deck at camp and get eaten alive with insects and yet they dont bother her.  Im thinking of asking my doctor if I can take them this year.  Seems to work.

I also have severe seasonal allergies.  My medication wont allow me to take anything for allergies though.  I will take something if its really bad and I cant sleep at night.  Im particularly allergic to specific trees.  Im also allergic to perfumes and strong scents like citronella.  I hate bug sprays as they are sticky.  Especially in your hair.

Anyone have any suggestions for keeping bugs away?  Ones that you have tried and work?

My daughter and grandson went to a birthday party in Glenville yesterday at a park, she stops at walmart on the way home, had to use the rest room and guess what she found on her leg. Yup, she drove over to my house, she was nervous doing it herself, so I got it out with the credit cards. She called another lady that was at the party with her daughter and sure enough she found a couple on her.

Todays one of those days. My Mom calls to tell me my aunt had a heart attack but would be ok. Then my hubby calls, I could tell something was wrong, his cousin who he just saw yesterday in the Price Chopper parking lot had a heart attack last  night and passed away. His aunt lost another son the same way a few years back and her hubby last yr.

Those little bastards are out in force this year, I had a couple on me already although I caught them before they sunk in. Last year was bad also, me and my friend went out in the woods and when we returned to the truck we were covered, I had about 20 on my clothes at once. Luckily we spotted them quick but we did look like idiots dancing around on the side of the road trying to get them off

To personally know two people that have Lyme disease for near 10 years before it was diagnosed I can tell you Lyme is a horrible disease if not caught early.

Luckily today doctors are recognizing it faster.  My one friend was being treated for MS when it was Lyme all along and well you would never believe all they have gone through.

All the years growing up I would play for hoursand hours in the woods around us.  i would lay in the fields looking up at the clouds, spend hours picking wild strawberries and never ever got a tic   It is concerning how things have changed.

Shadow : )

Cel-I'm a member of an MS forum and there have been some people there like your friend who were dxed with MS and it turned out to be lyme also.

When I was diagnosed with MS my neurologist had lots of bloodwork done, I went to St. Clares and they took 11 tubes at once, the tech said very unusual and did I want to come back the next day to donate more : )

All the bloodwork was to rule out other diseases and one was Lyme. I'm glad drs are recognizing how serious it is also. So glad my brother noticed his rash and put on antiobiotics right away.

I wonder if the health dept is aware of the large increase in ticks this year?  I know if you get Lyme its reported to them, but what about all of the people who have actually had ticks in them?

I know a woman who contracted Lymes and she ended up deaf in one ear and with a mild heart problem.

And there are doctors out there who still don't take it seriously enough!!!
