Radiation found in New York water

The State Health Department says traces of radioactive iodine have been found in New York's drinking water.

But doctors say, so far, there is no reason to be concerned and New Yorkers don't need to take any special precautions.

They say the radiation levels found are thousands of times lower than common medical imaging procedures, such as chest X-rays.

But just to be safe, air and water tests will be closely monitored for the next few weeks.

This info is far from settling.  Yes, thousands of times lower than a chest x-Ray, but what is the low level cumulative effects over a prolonged period of time.  If I ingest small trace amounts of radiation from air I breathe, water I drink, and food I eat, what are these cumulative long term effects?

I was thinking the same exact thing. But who will and can tell the people the long term effects?

My immediate question would be where are they getting the water for this test from?  Is it local water?  Is it just in a specific area?  Or is this from water all across the state?

My opinion would be it's across the State as the same results have been reported in Massachusetts.  Subsequent to my last post on this issue, I read about the contamination in Japan.  Apparently, most of the contamination is from radioactive iodine-131 (whatever that substance is), and supposedly it has a half life of only eight days.  If this is what they are measuring around here, it has an abbreviated time period.  They claim that is what they are measuring.  There is also radioactive plutonium released in Japan which is a whole different animal . . . .

Kevin:

I believe the water tested was collected rainwater.  Some degree of this does runoff and finds its way into surface waters often used as drinking supplies.

There is no doubt that there will be some repercussions on every living thing from this radiation. It will just be years and years before the effects will surface.

There is nothing in life that doesn't cause a reaction of some sort.

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Newton's Third Law.
