Union Busting:
Gov Walker gave $100 million dollars in Tax Cuts to corporations...
Now he wants working Americans to pay for it.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral
philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

A hundred million is a drop in the bucket when it comes to a multi billion dollar deficit.
Please don't say that you're one of the types that actually believe we can balance the budget without going after SS, medicare and medicaid?
If you are, you are in the majority...the majority that are living in denial

I'm drawing SS but I believe that something must be done to reform SS, Medicare, Medicaid, because they are just not sustainable in their present form. Right now they are just a big ponzi scheme that's about to collapse if something isn't done.

That first video is exactly the kind of simpleton explanation needed to make it understandable for Republicans/Tea Partiers.

Funny how the Republicans expect teacher pay and job retention to be determined by performance (based on their ability to help dozens of students a day who have different backgrounds, talents, and mental abilities), yet they lick the boots of billionaires who did their jobs so poorly that they destroyed the economy.

A billionaire, a Republican, and a teacher are seated around a dozen cookies. The billionaire takes 11 of them, then says to the Republican "Watch out! That teacher wants half of your cookie."

The big difference is the teachers are PUBLIC employees, the "billionaires" aren't.
Tenure is a joke. Name another profession where it exists?
There is a "white" building in NYC, where teachers that have been taken out of the classroom go to "work" everyday..and do nothing. Because it is too expensive for the district(s) to fire them...thanks to the teachers unions and their ridiculous contracts.

Tenure exists "for protection from being fired on a whim"???
really? welcome to the real world.

You must be a teacher, since you don't know Tea Partiers opposed the banker bailout.  More misguided class warfare.

Teachers use the students of different backgrounds, talents, and mental abilities as an excuse for their poor performance, but those same failing students are released into the workforce and the "billionaires" have to deal with the same dozens of failing students - but now they're uneducated, unprepared adults.  You know how they deal with it?  They move their businesses where people are more educated.  They are sick of paying taxes to fund failing schools, then have to pay to train them once they're in the workforce too.

Unions complain about good paying jobs going over sea's, but the reason they go over sea's is because our nations workers aren't as educated as workers from other countries.

Enough of the excuses.

Tenure exists because teachers are constantly at the mercy of budgets and politics. Without tenure, it would ALWAYS be more beneficial for a school district to fire a more experienced, higher-paid teacher to be replaced by an entry-level college grad who would make a fraction of the salary. What incentive is left for a person who has not only a BS, but in NYS is required to have a Master's degree within five years of starting a teaching career?

Now Cuomo is pushing to end the "last in, first out" rule when cutting teachers and teachers would be kept based on performance. This is another tactic for school districts to focus on higher paid teachers to be fired. Who determines the quality of a teacher? Is it simple test scores or is it actual knowledge gained by students? In subjective courses like art, how is it determined if the teacher is doing a good job? The fact is that statistics can be massaged to focus on firing older, higher-paid teachers to save money.

If you did any research on the "white" building in NYC, you'd find that a lot of those teachers were pushed into that building over petty grievances by administrators or false accusations by students. One male teacher was in there for months because a student heard him say "sh*t" in the hallway. If you asked many of those teachers what they'd rather be doing, they would say "teaching".

@Cicero, I'm not a teacher, otherwise I'd be working hard trying to teach 30+ kids in one classroom right now instead of posting here like you.

First of all, the Tea Partiers didn't exist until after the banker bailout (TARP), which was signed by Bush in 2008. The Tea Partiers didn't come around till a few weeks after Obama took office and then claimed that they were against deficit spending (which they apparently didn't care about while Bush was doubling the national debt). The Tea Partiers are simply a bigoted niche of conservative Republicans who didn't like having a black man as the president.

The only class warfare taking place is being waged by the billionaires, and you're one of their pawns. You have a such a lack of respect for teachers and education, yet you complain that our schools are failing and our students are not educated. You want to cut teacher pay and benefits to help out the billionaires, yet you complain that the poor billionaires can't find quality employees coming out of our school systems. Billionaires aren't moving to where people are more educated, they're moving to where people will accept pennies per hour compared to American workers. Billionaires are sick of paying taxes? You must feel pretty bad about that since they probably far less in taxes as a percentage than you do.

Jobs going overseas has nothing to do with education and has everything to do with billionaires not caring about the U.S. worker, only about their bottom line.

Like the private sector isn't at the mercy of budgets and politics? That just confirms my point about teachers living in fantasy land. I have been laid off 4 times in my career and picked myself back up and found another job. Incentive??? How about 12 weeks off a year and guaranteed pay raises above and beyond the negotiated COL increases with the "step" system. That sounds like plenty of incentive to me

So that is a valid reason for keeping tenure and protecting ineffective, burned out teachers?

I did do research on that building.. Petty grievances, complaints? Yeah, that never happens in the private sector, only with teachers.

@55tbird, wouldn't it be nice if the private sector unions were still around, rather than trying to tear down the unions that still exist? Basically, your solution is to make sure everybody is skating on thin ice. That would be great for the economy and the future of our country.

EVERYBODY IS SKATING ON THIN ICE!  That's the reality of life.  Nothing is GUARANTEED.  There is no magic contract that can be written that will guarantee money will be there in 30 years.  SOMEBODY HAS TO PAY!

Everyday, the guy/gal in the private sector goes to work, looking over his/her shoulder trying to stay one step ahead of the person that is trying to prove that he/she can do the job better than them.  AND THAT IS HEALTHY.  Workers sitting back and resting on their laurels doesn't work. ESPECIALLY IN EDUCATION!  LIFO may work with general unskilled laborers, but in educating our children?

Unions served their purpose in the late 19th and early twentieth centuries, but their necessity  has long passed.
They have become behemoths, full of corruption and questionable motives. They no longer function as originally intended. In most cases, they are roadblocks to progress. Take the NEA for example. Our kids are getting their butts beat in testing by the world. Instead of looking at what the successful countries are doing, they continue to protect their membership, refusing to change amount of time in the classroom, in both and hours and days, and they claim more money and technology will make things better. It hasn't and it won't.

I had ONE job that required I join a Union, and that was the most useless organization I have ever belonged to. All they did is take my money.
My solution is to make sure I am viable and marketable through education. I do not need a union for that.
I hardly skate on thin ice, but I don't expect to make $45 an hour to put on a car door because my Union strong-armed the Auto maker.

There are quite a few companies around that enjoy the same benefits and pay as the union represented companies and they don't have to pay high union dues that are used the way the International Unions wants and gives the members no say in the matter. WPJM why don't you do a google search for Richard Trumpka the head of the AFL-CIO/CWA and a whole group of unions and see what kind of a guy runs one of the largest unions in the USA and what he stands for. He's on the record as saying he cares not for workers wages/benefits but is real interested in social justice by using the millions of dollars in union dues to be used to put politicians in office that will pass laws that favor his views.
