SCHENECTADY At 104, woman keeps good memories BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette reporter Kathleen Moore at 395-3120 or moore@dailygazette.com.
The secret to living to 104 is all in the mind, Margaret Bashleben said at her century-plus birthday party on Saturday. “Stay young at heart,” she advised. “I think it must be in your nature. Always see the best in people.” Then she grinned. “And if you find out they’re not the best, give them a kick in the pants!” Bashleben still speaks with a thick German accent, despite immigrating to the United States at age 21 to join her fiance. They married the day after she arrived. She said she wasn’t at all nervous about moving to a foreign country. “At your age, you do a lot of things,” she said. “I knew what I was doing. I was looking forward to it.” Once here, she joined a German singing society and met a fellow immigrant who was desperate to get out of her aunt’s one-room fl at. Bashleben invited the woman to move in. The friendship changed Bashleben’s life. Bashleben never had children, and at 104, all of her blood relatives on this side of the Atlantic are dead. But she has a loving, devoted set of almost-children, and now a growing set of almost-grandchildren, thanks to her friend, who invited Bashleben to be an honorary mother. ...................>>>>.....................>>>>.................................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01300&AppName=1
