they chose the ventilator.....DNR/DNI or not......which ever their choice was.....a fetus has not the ability to choose, never has and
never will.....the ADULT RESPONSIBLE TO SHOULDER THE CHOICE HAS THAT.....

as for the mother in the car accident it happens.......I think the burden should be placed on the mother/father  or mother/mother or
father/father to prove their hurt from loosing the baby.....like loosing a limb or the ability to have sex.....folks actually do
sue for pain and suffering  because they are unable to have sex......anyhow driving is a priviledge and a risk....for EVERYONE....

If they have no health care proxy, correct me if I'm wrong, the Doctor is LEGALLY REQUIRED to intubate and resuscitate ... thus preserving life.

yes....but if there is no proxy the ethics board will go through a whole crap of legal mumbo jumbo with medical/science evidence of
brain death......if you can communicate and are not brain dead then there is nothing the MD can do....but they
can prove incompetency/brain death and the irreversible damage if no communication is made from the patient to the MD/family etc.....
however, I have taken care of folks who were 'living' off of a vent but with tube feeding....they cant do anything...no talking no
hand/finger or eye movements to communicate their needs/wants (if they were having them), because they only had base functions in
which the brain stem is allowing for their continued breath and heart beats.....take away the tube feeding and they will die....which is
sometimes what family does after taking the medical/science studies and tests to a court and then they remove the tube feeding.....
I have seen it many many times......

preserving life or living?

Hippocratic Oath

Original, translated into English:[4]
“      I swear by Apollo, the healer, Asclepius, Hygieia, and Panacea, and I take to witness all the gods, all the goddesses, to keep according to my ability and my judgment, the following Oath and agreement:

To consider dear to me, as my parents, him who taught me this art; to live in common with him and, if necessary, to share my goods with him; To look upon his children as my own brothers, to teach them this art.

I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone.

I will not give a lethal drug to anyone if I am asked, nor will I advise such a plan; and similarly I will not give a woman a pessary to cause an abortion.

But I will preserve the purity of my life and my arts.

I will not cut for stone, even for patients in whom the disease is manifest; I will leave this operation to be performed by practitioners, specialists in this art.

In every house where I come I will enter only for the good of my patients, keeping myself far from all intentional ill-doing and all seduction and especially from the pleasures of love with women or with men, be they free or slaves.

All that may come to my knowledge in the exercise of my profession or in daily commerce with men, which ought not to be spread abroad, I will keep secret and will never reveal.

If I keep this oath faithfully, may I enjoy my life and practice my art, respected by all men and in all times; but if I swerve from it or violate it, may the reverse be my lot.

Doctors Call Brain Surgery on Baby in Womb a Success
June 19, 1999|From Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Surgeons opened a woman's uterus and performed brain surgery on a fetus in March to relieve a buildup of water on the brain, a surgical first, doctors said Friday.

The baby was born two months later showing no signs of congenital hydrocephalus, or water on the brain, Dr. Joseph Bruner and Dr. Noel Tulipan said Friday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The doctors said they have used the procedure 49 times over the last two years to repair spina bifida lesions in the womb. They said it was the first time the procedure was used on the brain.

They acknowledge they won't know for six months to a year--until they can measure Neal Borkowski's IQ--whether he suffered any serious brain damage but say "he's developing now like a normal baby would."

"We really have to hedge our bets as to how he'll do over the long run," Tulipan said. But the fact that he was born without excess fluid on the brain makes the March 2 surgery a success, he said. Neal was born May 12.

The baby's mother, Susan Borkowski of Knoxville, said she learned during a routine ultrasound that her 20-week-old fetus had hydrocephalus. About one in every 2,000 babies is born with congenital hydrocephalus, and most are severely brain damaged.

"It wasn't really a decision," she said of the choice to try the experimental surgery. When she was 6, her brother died of hydrocephalus shortly after he was born, she said.

In the procedure, Borkowski's uterus was opened by Bruner, then Tulipan made an incision in the fetus' skull and placed a shunt, or small tube, in the fluid space of the brain.

The opposite end of the shunt was hooked to a small valve controlling the flow of fluid. The valve was connected to another long, thin tube that was tunneled out through the baby's skin between the shoulder blades and the fluid drained into the amniotic fluid in his mother's uterus.

The infant was delivered by Cesarean section five weeks early, weighing 4 pounds, 7 ounces. A second operation was performed to exchange the tube for a shunt draining the fluid into his abdominal cavity.

Left untreated, the child most likely would have been born with an enlarged head filled with fluid and almost no brain function.

there was a child who was being driven to school by their father and was in an accident on their way to school. they arrive at the ER and are wisked away to surgery. the surgeon looks at the child and states "I cannot perform surgery on this child because they are my child." who is the surgeon?

How can this surgeon say such blasphemous things like operating on the brain of a 20-week-old fetus?  At 20 weeks, the fetus is just a random group of cells; it would be impossible for him to locate a head or brain.  I'm skeptical about this story.

BECAUSE SHE CHOSE TO HAVE HER BODY CUT INTO AS A SACRIFICE....surgery doesn't come without dangers(ALOT OF THEM)....no one is cutting
into the father now are they? BECAUSE THEY CANT.......so really it IS CHOICE from beginning to end......not all women are mothers.....just because
they can carry babies doesn't mean they are a mother.....they are a female based on biology and can but it doesn't make a mother.....or a father....

and this is a delusional statement.....she should own her choice....everyone should......OF COURSE IT WAS A DECISION....it's like voting or not....
if one doesn't vote then they have made a choice to accept the outcome because they didn't vote against......

and if she searched herself and stated it properly (not like she's some kind of Jesus) it was a decision based on her history and knowledge.....

Isn't an abortion surgery?  So one surgery to kill life is safer than surgery to save life?

abortion is a form of surgery....and the second part is the weight of one's choice.....just like if an MD gave you options for some
tumor in your body....

with surgery you will live another 2 years but you cant feed yourself
without surgery you will live 1 year with all your faculties

or

there is a 75% chance of you living in a wheelchair after surgery

Cicero,
If you think a 20 week old fetus is just a "random group of cells", you need a science lesson.  Brain structure is at the very beginning of the process.

Oh Thanks, I was just basing on your teachings.  I thought  legal abortion up to 24 weeks meant a fetus was just a random blob of cells.  You know, like Bob.  Now I'm confused - thanks for nothing.  Back to the drawing board.

Bob was a just fertilized egg (for most people, but a baby for you).
with luck, Bob will develop into a fully formed fetus, then possibly a human being.

You really do need a medical book on the subject.

Why do you people even argue with this idiot?

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
