Shooting prompts legislation to protect lawmakers, officials
Washington (CNN) - Rep. Robert Brady, D-Pennsylvania, said he will introduce legislation making it a federal crime for a person to use language or symbols that could be perceived as threatening or inciting violence against a Member of Congress or federal official.

Brady's decision to offer the legislation comes less than 24 hours after a gunman attempted to assassinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Arizona, in a shooting that claimed the lives of a federal judge, and a nine year-old girl, among others.

"The president is a federal official," Brady said in a telephone interview with CNN. "You can't do it to him; you should not be able to do it to a congressman, senator or federal judge.

"This is not a wake up call, this is major alarms going off," he said.

Brady is particularly incensed over a web posting by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin during the 2010 election in which she targeted 20 House Democrats, including Giffords for political defeat. The posting showed a map of the United States with the 20 Democratic congressional districts identified by gun sights.

"You can't put bulls eyes or crosshairs on a United States congressman or a federal official," Brady said. "I understand this web site that had it on there is no longer in existence. Someone is feeling a little guilty."

But a Palin aide Saturday denied the web posting from the 2010 congressional campaign was designed to incite violence. Rebecca Mansour told conservative host Tammy Bruce that it was a political tool and noted it should have been removed after the November election.

Brady said he is hearing that the spouses of some of his congressional colleagues, specifically the newly elected members, are terrified and questioning whether they should remain in Congress. Upon hearing the news of the shooting Saturday, some spouses attending a freshman retreat in West Virginia, were "taking their children out of the daycare," Brady said he was told.

"The spouses are in an uproar," he said. "They are panicking."

Brady said it is now time to put an end to the hyper-charged language.

"The rhetoric is just ramped up so negatively, so high, that we have got to shut this down," Brady said, noting that "I've had my share of death threats" over his many years in politics.

Brady said he has not spoken to his House colleagues about the bill or a senator who might offer similar legislation. But Brady noted that he hoped to have it ready as soon as possible.

Brady stressed he is not "pointing at any particular party" noting that there is Democratic rhetoric and actions at times that he thinks is out of bounds. "You can disagree without being disagreeable," he said.

As for support for the bill, Brady said, "Why would you be against it?"

How about the rhetoric on the left, scaring the sh!t out of the public, threatening to encroach on the 1st amendment over a shooting that has absolutely nothing to do with political rhetoric, the Tea Party or Sarah Palin? There is ZERO evidence that this whack job had any connection to any of this.  There is no evidence he listened to talk radio, watched Fox News, or subscribed to the Weekly Standard.

The fabrication of this story to stifle political dissent is an assault on the American people by the totalitarian political elites.  Why do they continue to agitate the American citizens?

What about Cuomo and his depiction of battleships and dive bombing in last week's State of the State speech with the picture and all!? Is this not an issue? Ahhh, but the board of acceptable speech will be composed of members of only the liberal democrap party. And phony republicrats. Let's not kid ourselves.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Congress just doesn't understand that passing a law forbidding certain speech or symbols as being a threat will not stop a nut job from doing something horrible like this again. What are they going to do shout you can't do that it's against the law.

only because there are a bunch of Mamby-Pamby PC baby's around....who decided to dumb down the edumacation system and allow for so many
alternatives in the English language that it makes the natives angry when they are not understood and educated at least to the level of proper
English rhetoric.....I understand Latin is a lost language but it kept everyone more or less together with understanding.....so some where society has
failed....if we had kept up with our language the internet wouldn't be so scary.....go ahead do your politico rhetorical divide and conquer and you have
restless natives with tribal instincts.....leaders,,,yeah right.....just a bunch of Mamby-Pambys.....

now lets get back to educating folks for the distinct goal of civil discourse and drop the feel good ethos illogical PC.....feelings are dangerous and although
they help in survival they can kill as we have seen

When person is believed to have mental problems as the college he was attending thought someone in the law enforcement community should have been notified to prevent the shooter from being able to buy a pistol regardless of the HIPPA laws. A perfect case of our own laws preventing anyone from stopping a possible murder.

I think I didn't come across correctly.....I wasn't putting the HIPPA laws in line with gun laws....I was putting HIPPA laws in line
with a 'pre-crime' mentality that doesn't even have to do with guns......come on....most of us have hands, feet, teeth etc.....we can
hold plenty of other weapons and even if we dont there are our own bodies.....a psycho is a psycho with or without a gun....but HIPPA
psych protection prevents the info from going to insured---ie:difficult to obtain records....ER/hospital personel are compelled
by law to ask certain questions and administer certain question/answer assessments....currently it is at their discretion...but as computers
are used just one keystroke and-----"here's your sign" or in other words your medical record/work record/RealID record etc etc....would
it be a safer society?....eh,who knows???

I agree with you if a person wants to do something like this if they can't do it legally they will do it illegally and they can't be stopped.

How are the liberal democrat loons going to back out of this one?  In an attempt to damage the reputaion of the Tea Party and conservative Americans, they have done more damage to their own.  They have used the tragic assasination attempt on a congresswomen and the murder of a 9-year-old girl as political fodder against their political opponent over the past 48 hours.  How can Americans trust such soulless people? Are the people on the left's political bias' so overwhelming that they are willing to drag the families of the victims into a partisan attack without a shred of evidence this kid was politically motivated by some right wing group.  They are willing to smear MILLIONS of Americans that share the same beliefs as those that march in the Tea Party, because the irrational actions of a mentally ill 22 year old.  The American left wing has sunk to a new low.
