A terrible tragedy : ( We also own guns, no handguns, rifles for target practice. My son raised on the safe use. Never load a gun unless with an adult on the range. When on the range there are strict rules also for safety. Like getting the all clear to change targets etc.
I believe in the right to bear arms, I think that the handgun should have had a lock knowing that young kids were at the house alone at times, just common sense. The father must of thought because he had the ammo and gun seperate .......
As for the age of the kids staying home alone, it really depends on the kid. At age 11 I used to babysit three kids overnight, the youngest a toddler.
As others have said there are many things kids can get hurt on or worse, matches, swimming pools the list is long.
Reminds me of the terrible fire on McCllelan St. where the brother started the fire that his grandma and sister died in. It wasn't intentional, but he will have to live with that his whole life : ( He was not charged with manslaughter, can't understand why they are going after the 12 year old, it was an awful accident.
Right now two families are suffering horribly and my prayers go out to them. Saw the father of the child that was shot, unimaginable pain and grief.
