Darvon and Darvocet have been pulled from the U.S. market by maker Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has concerns that the drugs may increase the risk for serious abnormal heart rhythms. Davron and Darvocet contain main ingredient "propoxyphene"
Davron was originally developed by Eli Lilly & Co., and has been on the U.S. market for more than 50 years. It contains the active ingredient propoxyphene. Later, Eli Lilly & Co. combined Davron with acetaminophen, and created what is known as Darvocet. Today, both Davron and Darvocet are marketed by private, generic drug makers, including Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, Inc..
According to a report in The Wall Street Journal today, Xanodyne agreed to remove propoxyphene from the U.S. market following a study that examined the effects of the drug on the heart. The FDA indicated that it will be sending letters to other makers of both Darvon and Darvocet with a request that the drugs be taken off the U.S. market.
"With the new study results, for the first time we now have data showing that the standard therapeutic dose of propoxyphene can be harmful to the heart," said Gerald Dal Pan, the director of FDA's Office of Surveillance and Epidemiology,” the WSJ reported.
Prior to the study, it was thought that arrhythmias associated with the drugs occurred at higher than recommended doses. However, it now appears that data indicates even suggested doses can cause heart arrhythmia, Med Page Today reported.
Xanodyne released a statement following its decision to pull the drugs, stating, "FDA has determined that the benefits of propoxyphene-containing products no longer outweigh the potential risks."
Just last year, the FDA required tough warnings to be applied to Darvon and Darvocet, including the risk of fatal overdose. However, at that time, they did not determine that the drugs should be taken off the U.S. market.

No one needs to heckle them since they do a good job heckling themselves. If you are embarrassed, you aren't conscious. |
