Iraq church raid ends with 52 dead
Dozens killed in Iraq church siege (02:06) Report
By Muhanad Mohammed
BAGHDAD | Mon Nov 1, 2010 7:37pm EDT
(Reuters) - Fifty-two hostages and police were killed when an attempt by Iraqi security forces to free more than 100 Catholics held in a Baghdad church by al Qaeda-linked gunmen turned into a bloodbath, officials said on Monday.

Church officials described the attack, which began when gunmen seized the Our Lady of Salvation Church during Sunday mass, as the bloodiest against Iraq's Christians in the seven years of sectarian war that followed the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

The Islamic State of Iraq, the al Qaeda-affiliated group which claimed responsibility, also threatened the Christian church in Egypt over its treatment of women the group said the church was holding after they had converted to Islam.

Egypt condemned the threat to its Christian community, which makes up about 10 percent of the country's 78 million people. It beefed up security around churches.

Iraqi Human Rights Minister Wijdan Michael, a Christian, said at the scene of the Baghdad attack: "What happened was more than a catastrophic and tragic event. In my opinion, it is an attempt to force Iraqi Christians to leave Iraq and to empty Iraq of Christians."

Lieutenant General Hussein Kamal, a deputy interior minister, said 52 hostages and police were killed and 67 wounded in the incident, which ended with police storming the Assyrian Catholic church to free more than 100 hostages.

The death toll was many times higher than that given overnight in the hours after the raid.

At least one bomb exploded at the start of the siege. Sporadic gunfire rang out for several hours over the Karrada neighborhood near the heavily fortified Green Zone district where many embassies and government offices are located.

"The attackers were among children, armed with weapons," a federal police source who declined to be identified said of Sunday's rescue effort. "Most of the casualties were killed or wounded when the security forces raided the place."

Officials say some of the attackers blew up explosives vests or threw grenades during the raid. Security sources said many of the victims died in gunfights between police and insurgents.

Iraq's Christians, who once numbered 1.5 million out of a total Iraqi population of about 30 million, have frequently been targeted by militants since the invasion, with churches bombed and priests assassinated. Many have fled.

Before George Worst Bush decided to invade Iraq and grab their oil, this kind of thing NEVER happened.  Some of Saddam's closest staff were Christians, and Christian churches operated freely with little interference.

So much for Bush's "beacon of democracy in the Middle East"... One more Bush failure!

BS Box of Rox. Muslims have been murdering Christians and Jews for centuries. Before Israel, "peace loving" Muslims murdered Jews in the Holy Land. How do you think that Saudi Arabia got to be all Muslim? By the sword that is on the Saudi flag. Convert to Muslim-you heathens or be beheaded.

Lebanon is another disgrace. This was a peaceful majority Christian nation 20 years ago. Christians have been forced from their ancestral homes. What about their right to return? This is always a one way street. Same with the West Bank. 60 Minutes did a report on how the West Bank is being made Christian free by Muslims "moderates". Muslim have zero tolerance for religious freedom but want their rights elsewhere. And some stooges in this Nation and Europe carry their water.

Blah, Blah, Blah...
Muslims have been killing Christians and Christians have been killing Muslims for centuries... BUT NOT IN IRAQ!
This incident involves IRAQ... Remember IRAQ?  The country that GWB (invaded)  "LIBERATED"?

The Christians in IRAQ didn't need "LIBERATING" from Saddam to practice their religion...  Christian churches operated freely in Iraq for hundreds of years without interference... UNTIL GWB Liberated Iraq.  Now since the Bush LIBERATION of Iraq, Christians are targets.

George Worst Bush... The Christians of Iraq thank you!

So did anyone read about this in any media outlet?  Didn't think so!!

But if these were muslims who fell victim to those nasty Christians........it would be HEADLINES!!!

Was there any outrage from the muslim community? Didn't think so!!

Ya see....liberal socialists don't believe in 'personal responsibility'! They must always blame and victimize!! And hence the liberal media follows suit!

The radical Muslims trained in Iraq then took their trade of bomb making on road trips. Any country that gives aid or comfort to the people trying to kill Americans are also as guilty as the radicals doing the killing. I personally don't believe anyone was safe under Saddam not even other Muslims. How many of his own people did he kill to remain in power, how many people were tortured, raped and imprisoned because Saddam suspected them of something without proof.

The organized religions always choose the "safety" of tyranny and dictatatorship and government control over the risks associated with freedom, in each and every context. That is why they are under scrutiny for "not doing enough to stop the holocaust." Even in America the Catholic Church is firmly aligned with the big government totalitarian party- the democrats, and is willing to silently abide by abortion and euthanasia and other things contrary to the church teaching while making statements like "the people are safer and there is less risk of ..."

So really, I am sure Il Vaticano was upset by the American revolution but considering there were very few Catholics in America in 1776, they probably figured it was fine at the time if the Protestants killed each other.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

This issue isn't just about "Catholics" GB, It's about all Christians.
They were safe from religious persecution in Iraq under Saddam... but thanks to GWB, they are now being killed and Iraq is a disaster with no government.

For this result the USA paid $1Trillion dollars, and more importantly, the lives of 4427 American Patriots.

Back off Bush supporters.  Boxy has got you on this one.  Before Bush's war, more than one-half million Catholics lived there.  They started booking out because Bush called for war.  Most of the Christians in Iraq are Chaldean--but smaller numbers are Latin-right and various Catholic traditions.  Boxy is once again the manof the hour.  I read about the attack and heard it on the news.  Why didn't you?  Stop listening to Fox--that's your problem.

Cicero,
The Catholic source was just one option... in total I posted 4 or 5 sources.

Religious freedom, womens rights, minority rights  were in the news before and after the Bush Invasion. Saddam was a Muslim but was not a particularly religious man.  Women held govt posts, could drive and wear modern dress under Saddam.

Iraq soon will morph into an Islamic Fundamentalist State... THANKS GWB!!!
