Hotlinking is ALWAYS a bad idea, because there is nothing to prevent the original host from changing the photo on you, to something very objectionable, that will get you banned on most sites.

OK. I don't fault you for it, but I don't think you know how this works. You're still seeing the photo (when you click on your provided link, and still not paying for it) but at least you're not stealing their bandwidth when you're using your own photo host, and I don't think anybody at Yahoo is going to bed hungry tonight, because you failed to provide the 1/100 of a penny that the advertising revenue would generate from your click.
As far as this site "crashing"? Stop me if you've heard this one but, NO. If someone posted a whole bunch of pictures, your machine might have a problem digesting it, or your internet connection might take a while to render it (if you're still on dial-up, you might want to hold a bake sale), but no.
