Farley’s Taxpayer-Funded Vacations Cost Taxpayers Double Previous Estimate Las Vegas, Miami and Multiple Hawaiian Excursions Top List of Getaways Rotterdam – Albany incumbent Hugh Farley has traveled the world… costing taxpayers at least twice as much as previously thought! Farley’s carefree spending of taxpayer funds was originally thought to be approximately $40,000 for his travels to vacation destinations such as Hawaii, Miami and Las Vegas – but an Albany Times Union recently found indicates Farley’s spending is more than double earlier estimates, topping at least $80,000.
“If Senator Farley wants to visit Hawaii, Las Vegas and Miami he should pay for it himself and stop treating taxpayers as a blank check. Local residents did not elect him to visit Disney World on their behalf” said Susan Savage, candidate for the 44th Senate District and Chairwoman of the Schenectady County Legislature. “People are struggling and cannot afford these type of vacations themselves. Not only did Senator Farley charge taxpayers for his travels, but he voted against opening state parks this year which would have taken away the only vacation many families could afford.”
Susan added, “Senator Farley uses the excuse ‘it’s allowed’, but that doesn’t make it right. In the Senate, under no circumstance will I participate on taxpayer-funded junkets. Senator Farley had the opportunity to provide full documentation of these trips, including itineraries, meetings attended, and legislative action which resulted from each but has refused to disclose this information. If Hugh Farley is not able to produce all of this documentation, he should reimburse the taxpayers – with interest.”
Previous estimates were based on documents from 1996 to 2010 – the additional spending charges were brought to light by then-Supervisor Roy McDonald for Farley vacations taken between 1982 and 1992.
