WinPatrol, in case you don't know, is a really great application for protecting your system. It was created by Scotia resident Bill Pytlovany and has won an award or two, and for good reason. WP became my friend when it saved me a system rebuild because of its capabilities. It comes in its basic form free, or you can have a life time 'Plus' edition for a one-time cost, which is quite modest. I know of no savvy computer folk who don't use and endorse it. That said, at least two of the heavy hitters in the industry, McAfee and Trend Micro Systems, have declared war on WinPatrol. Note that both of these products were hawked at one time by Dell computers as part of their package. Currently, if you're stuck with Trend and renew with them, it will tell you that the install can't work until WP is removed. For info on what McAfee is doing against WP, log into Facebook and go to this URL: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/billp?v=wall&story_fbid=123908650996048Frankly, having seen Trend's behavior, I'm disgusted. I've asked BillP (as he refers to himself) what the best alternative is, and how to uninstall Trend. Also, I'll next be headed for the Dell forums. Two products that they have bundled are involved in predatory behavior against a very good application, and that's not right. Trend gives no reason why it cannot co-exist with WP, but after you spend your $100 it won't complete the install until you allow it to delete WP. I'll also be forwarding this info to the Attorney General of NY for that office to investigate; they should not be allowed to take your money first and then beat you up over it. Finally, I just went to the Trend site and (small surprise) no user forums in sight. Suggests that they suck out loud. |
