A lot can be done when a community works together -- that is the REAL MEANING of "Working Together Works" IMHO.
Last Spring the Challenger League revitalized the ballfields, clubhouse, and parking are at Woestina Park -- the only cost to the town -- 3 or 4 blue plastic garbage receptacles.
Going forward with our Town's Vision 2020 Parks and Recreation Plan -- I am hoping that we can see more of this type of community working together.
This is why I'd like to see a truly multi-generational community center to replace the existing senior center and boys & girls club. By bringing together people of ALL ages -- we increase the possibility of creating opportunities for people to volunteer to serve each other. Retired folks working with young people --- young people helping out the towns' seniors ... etc.

I get out quite a bit. While there are some young folks who interact with seniors -- the days of the extended families all living in the same house or neighborhood is LONG gone. I know from personal experience --- for years the descendents of my mother's father' father ALMOST ALL lived within about 3 miles of the original family farm near County Line Rd. The farthest cousins or second cousins ..lived in the city of Schenectady and Princetown. That situation doesn't exist anymore -- just my 2 aunts, my brother and I, and a 3 cousins (and their families) are all that are left IN the whole Capital District Region.
But getting back to a community center --- the senior center is in rough shape .. the boys and girls club is in rough shape ..... both are well over 60 years old --- they need to be replaced with one center that is handicapped accessible, has adequate space for large and small group events, and suitable facilities.
and not just for those under 18 and over 60 ... but truly something for residents of ALL ages

Nobody wants to pay for the Corvette, we just keep on putting new rims on the Escort. We talk about dog parks, senior centers, and boys and girls clubs, a county nusing home, all while the infrastructure is falling apart around us, and our sewer system is 40 years behind the times for a town this size. What's next on the Agenda, buying new streetscape Christmas decorations?
The parks and a community center are a part of the infrastructure of a town. Since I am on the Parks and Recreation Commission, my focus is on the parks and a possible new community center.
I will focus on the issues that a) I am directly involved in and b) interest me the most.

Our founding Fathers and Mothers --- laid out a "common area" or "village green" .. and built a community center which acted as church, school, and civic center
Rotterdam needs a general use park -- a "common area" and a multigenerational community center to bring us together.

You know that I support putting in sewers ... Rotterdam has intentionally passed up many opportunities to get Federal and State grants to offset the cost of sewer installation.
Some will say that these grants aren't needed and drive up the cost of government --- however from the 1970's through even the last stimulus ---- look how many BILLIONS of Federal and State dollars .. our tax dollars ... were spent by other towns in other states ????????? What did Rotterdam get out of all of that ??? very little --- at least during the Great Depression we got the original part of the current Town Hall built
The Stimulus -- $800 billion divided by every American --- multiplied by the 28,000 residents of Rotterdam ---- means that our town should have gotten about $75 million (assuming that the money was FAIRLY distributed per citizen) --- for that kind of money we could have installed sewers all throughout the town and bought ice cream sundaes for everyone !!!!

It's plain to see why you're a Democrat by the way you interpret what you read. No where in the defination does it mention the word park and you can spin it all you want it's not a necessary service nor is a community center mentioned.

Since the definition says " facilities, services, and installations" - but does not limit what those terms mean .. I am free to define parks and community centers as infrastructure ---- by the way ---- I think more people think that parks and a community center are an essential element needed for the "functioning of the community" ... again I cite the two historical examples ... Among the first things our Forefathers did was to build "meeting house= -- which was basically a community center ... and set aside a "common area" -- which became the community's park and gathering area.
So it is NOT just "spinning" .... and I believe most reasoning people would agree with my interpretation.
