Conservatives embrace Paladino
By CASEY SEILER State Editor
Published: 12:00 a.m., Thursday, September 30, 2010

COLONIE -- "That wasn't easy," Carl Paladino said as he took the podium to accept the state Conservative Party's gubernatorial nomination.

The line elicited a big laugh from the 60-odd delegates assembled Wednesday afternoon at the Holiday Inn Turf on Wolf Road -- including a number of supporters of former Congressman Rick Lazio, who gave up the Conservative line on Monday after winning it overwhelmingly in the Sept. 14 primary.

"I had a great team before I walked in here," Paladino told the crowd, "and now I've got the greatest team."

State Conservative Chairman Michael Long, a Lazio supporter, described the nomination as the end of a combative phase in his relationship with Paladino, a wealthy Buffalo developer whose win in the Republican primary shocked many members of the GOP establishment.

Paladino's win on the Republican line was more than shocking to state Conservatives: It imperiled the party's chances of winning 50,000 votes in the general election, the threshold required to maintain its regular ballot line.

The day before the primary, Long had called Paladino a sure loser in the general election and "a dangerous candidate" for Republicans -- a comment that Long amended slightly Wednesday as he answered press questions with Paladino at his side: The candidate was dangerous, Long said, "to the liberals of this state and to the dysfunction of Albany."

Lazio bowed out without endorsing Paladino, who he lumped in with Democratic nominee Andrew Cuomo as "flawed individuals." Lazio was hastily nominated for a state Supreme Court judgeship, one of the get-off-the-ballot mechanisms that allowed the party to replace him with Paladino. (The other options included Lazio's death or departure from New York.)

Long insisted the party hadn't tossed Lazio aside to shore up its ballot line. "It came about that Mr. Lazio and Mr. Paladino and the Conservative party had more in common," he said. " ... We all have one thing in common: Andrew Cuomo should not be elected governor of the state of New York."........................>>>>.................>>>>.........................http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Conservatives-embrace-Paladino-680579.php

What phonies! Now they want on the ride!

I say we all screw both the repugs and the conservatives and vote for Carl on the TaxPayer line

It'd be funny if the conservative line went away and got replaced by the TaxPayer line

Apparently the two major parties made some loo hole law that makes it so that the votes on that line don't count because of the differnt running mates or something so don't take the chance (if you really aren't a Cuomo supporter.)

the "loop hole" you speak of is nothing new --- it has been the law for a number of years

Paladino and one of his LT Gov candidates are on the GOP and Conservative lines .. those votes can be
added together.

Paladino and the Lt Gov on the  Taxpayer Party line ... those votes can't be added to the above .. because
the Lt Gov is diffeent.

This means that Ognibene needs to go away so that Edwards can take the TaxPayer line

Which means Ognibene's gotta be offered a judgeship someplace

Well, they found one for Lazio, can they not find one for Ognibene?  Is he qualified for such a position?

That depends on the the specific post.

Too late for the judgeship --- that deadline was last week.

I believe ... even if Mr. Ognibene dropped out or died  between now and election day.. his name would still be on the ballot.

that was why I was asking this very question on Seot 15 ... and you folks were calling me all kinds of nasty
things ...  now you folks have figured out a week too late -- that Paladino screwed up ... and I tried to
warn you.

I don't remember calling you names. I may have commented about somebody else tho...

On the surface, there does appear to be a problem...

From the NYS Constitution, Article IV section 1...

"The Governor and the Lt Governor shall be chosen at the general election held in the year 1938 and every 4th year thereafter. They shall be CHOSEN JOINTLY, by the casting by each voter of a single vote applicable to both offices, and the legislature shall provide for making such choice in such manner. The respective persons having the highest number of votes cast jointly for them for Governor and Lt Governor respectively shall be elected."

I'm not qualified to conjecture as to the ramifications of this

The ramifications are ---   the votes for Paladino on the GOP and Conservative lines can be added together
.... but NOT the votes for Paladino on the Taxpayer Party line.
Cuomo's votes on the Democratic, Independence, and Working Families lines can be added together.

Paladino supported would be wise to vote on either the GOP or Conservative lines .. in order for their
candidate to have a chance at winning.

No more ramifications... according to the NYS Board of Elections...

All votes for Paladino on the Taxpayer line go to Edwards as well. The Governor and Lt are elected as a team. Ognibene is not on the ballot."

So Ognibene is dropping out ????

Maybe he is joining the many who are running AWAY from Paladino's candidacy.

Why run away from destiny......even if Paladino isn't elected the electorate that is mad as hell will still exist.....and I'm sure those elected will not be in
good standing for those folks.....it's kind of hard to rule an angry mob..........
