Schalmont school tax rate increases slightly

ROTTERDAM — Homeowners in the Schalmont Central School District with an assessment of $100,000 will see an increase of $18 in their tax bills.
The 2010-2011 homestead tax rate for property owners has been set at $17.92 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, which is an increase of 18 cents from the current year. Owners of a house assessed at $100,000 would pay roughly $1,792 in taxes.
The homestead rate is different for other property owners in other towns in the district. For Princetown, the rate is dropping from $57.43 to $55.78. For Duanesburg, it is also declining 9.5 percent from $62.49 to $56.56. Guilderland is dropping less than 1 percent from $21.14 to $20.99. Tax bills are due at the end of the month.
Voters in May passed a $42,325,000 spending plan, which keeps spending level with the previous year. The budget cut 14 fulltime equivalent positions, affecting about 20 people in all. The budget reductions were necessary because the district lost more than $1 million in state aid and also it has experienced a decline in enrollment of about 300 students during the last six years. The district also tapped about $600,000 from its surplus. ....................>>>>....................>>>>...........................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00805&AppName=1
