The dog park would be a great idea....especially for those dog owners who are too lazy to go for walks, or, who let their pets deposit wherever they want to (without any pickups) ....it may prevent dogs from being let out to roam Rotterdam......AND.....the owners would pay a fee to defray any costs....AND....look for space that would allow this to happen....not plunk it anywhere....        ..
Open up Rotterdam....tunnel vision is not very complimentary.

How about create a dog park with over sight...creating a seasonal job for someone or a few people. Charge $1.00 per dog to run & play for a hour with other dogs. $1.00 is not alot but it will bring in revenue to pay for supervision. It is a quality of life issue. Most people own pets today. Dogs need to be exercised and not all owners are in good health to walk their pets. Some owners need to socialize their pups. I think it is a good idea but I don't think it should be free and I DO think that we should be thinking about creating more jobs in this high unemployment climate we are currently living in.....

so the government should be in the position of creating jobs???

people are in to bad of health to walk their dogs but they can bring them to a dog park and supervise them??

If someone is too lazy to walk their dog then they are not going to take them to a park, and if they cant walk them for physical reasons then i would rather see them pay a kid to walk their dog that would be the responsible thing to do.

why not charge use for all the parks on an hourly basis we can install turnstyles and kiosks to sell tickets???   I believe that is called SCREWING the TAXPAYERS TWICE!!!

well Tdonovan i believe you just killed any hope i might have had for the republican party.

That's the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard.  Create another set of patronage positions to "staff" the park and collect $1???  For how many hours a day? Maybe we should staff a "trainer" too?

How about giving out some MetroBux to a business to open a new business in the park (much like our "parking authority") ?? Ya, that's the way.

And you represent the republican party? No wonder it's the minority.  With your way of thinking, it'll continue to be minority for a VERY long time.

WHAT???? Is it the governments roll to create jobs? I thought that was the roll of the private sector. People are hurting right now and you support a DOG PARK? And charge a buck to get in??  And employ people at the taxpayers expense...for what?....a dog park?? OMG!

The same amount of people that wanted a REMS taxing disrict.  It's the politicians who feel they need to do something just to say they did something.  The political class look no further than the next election.

The idea came from a non-politician at one of the 5 Public Input Sessions on the Town Parks and Recreation Plan.  These sessions were held between the 2nd week of May and the 2nd week of August.   The draft Town Parks and Recreation Plan has been online at Rotterdamny.org  since mid May and copies of the draft along with a box to receive comments were in the outer office area of the Supervisors office have been in the office since mid May.

I do have to make some more copies of the draft and the comment sheets - I will keep them up until our next Parks Commission meeting at the end of September.

Since the idea came from a taxpayer at a Public Input Session on the future of our town parks, it deserves to at least be brought up at a formal meeting of the Parks Commission -
as I have said earlier .. I have no opinion one way or the other on this particular idea.

I (as chairman of the commission) am just giving it the same consideration that I would give any other idea porposed by a Rotterdam taxpayer for our town parks.

I would think you should hve some responsibility to shoot it down once it is brought up. Some guys would like whip cream covered bikini models to dance for them at taxpayer expense, it doesn't mean it should really be considered. I guess while we are in tough times, the government as usual can't live without expanding, growing, taking in more and getter more wasteful by the hour.

So you really think that as a member of a public commission, I should "shoot down" any idea that comes from a taxpayer .. just because 10 or so people on a blog with like 3 dozen members don't like the idea ???
I guess I learned about democracy and public service from a different school than you did.

So far not a dime of public money has been spent on thinking about the idea .. the Parks Commission has not cost the town a dime since we started (we pay for our postage and copies and other expenses) ...   so I think the taxpayers can afford to let us study and discuss the proposal ... before we make up our minds one way or the other.

Just to clarify: Members: 290 - yet, I haven't seen one person actually support this thinking process yet, except you.

Tell us, were there more than 10 people requesting a DOG PARK? And if this blog is so insignificant, why are the town workers told to stay off of it??????

And where are the government representatives that will come right out and tell the taxpayers who suggest a ridiculous DOG PARK, that 'we are in a recession' and the town just doesn't have the money or time to look into this right now'.....there are bigger fish to fry!!! How about trying the TRUTH!!!

How about telling them that a dog park may be somewhere in the future, but right now we have to focus on updating the town's infrastructure??? DUH?
