Ya can't take it out of the governments hands now....it's too late!

It CAN be done. It must be done, if it's ever to succeed. With a constant changing of the guard, when managed by a town govt that's voting on issues based on election polls, it'll never change - never prosper.

One of the best ways of teaching children to own up to their responsibilities is by being living examples. A good leader -- and every parent is a "leader" in their family -- is one who can stand up and say: "I'm responsible, and there is an important lesson I have learned about how to avoid such a thing happening in the future."

It's up to you. Do you let it continue to fester, not make progress and not serve it's mission - do you just give up and let someone else do it? If that's your choice, don't come bitching that nobody's taking care of you when you're 80 / 90 and that you're hungry, bored or alone (probably because your kids moved out of state, or never had any kids).

We must take responsibility. We must take care of our elders like they took care of us. They didn't rely on politicians to make sure we were fed. They didn't rely on elected leaders to make sure we had entertainment. They took the bull by the horns, worked and provided for us. Now it's time we do the same for them.

That is cool.    I just don't intend to work full-time in Town Hall for free.

Now -- everyone of the folks that I helped get elected last November  (and I was only a very small part
of the whole team)   knows my home number, my email, and my cell phone number.  If they want my
help or advice ...  I am a team player.   If they don't ask for help, I can't force it on them.

and I dont intend to pay alot for something that is 'free for others'.......that is why we need foundational building.....like sewers
leaders make the footing for the poles then the poles go in THEN the tent goes up....got it???????
and it cant just be some helter-skelter crap either.......style style style and class.......dollar stores just wont cut it.......

I appreciate your enthusiasm....but this is ny and seniors are a large group that the government can and do use to pass legislation and increase taxes. They are doing that in rotterdam with rems. They are out scaring the hell out of the seniors with a bunch of lies!!!! That is what obama used when he rammed the health care beast down our throats!!!

I already volunteer for the elderly....and you don't need to be a part of a 'group' to do it.

A senior center is an entirely different animal....it's a 'social center' for seniors!! A 'want' not a 'need'!!!!

Again....your mixing apples and oranges here!

Well BT you LOVED the senior center when you went there begging the seniors to vote for you.  Then you screwedthem by doing nothing to improve their life.

MT I was really speaking about me.  I am not interested in "volunteering" at this stage of my life.  And btw, I am really a bit older than you.  I get paid to consult on these isues.  A senior center is not a luxury just for socialization.  Volunteers are the heart of many programs I agree.  But you need competent, experienced people to lead the initiative.  Rotterdam is not prepared for the those approaching the Third Age.  What's worse is I don't think they are even interested in getting ready.

MT you post was excellent!  I am sure where you live now is accommodating and they are very fortunate to have someone of your caliber stepping up to the plate. Excellent post.  I hope all will read it and then reread it.  I know I will.  I am sorry I never had the opportunity to work with you.  Your insights are exceptional on so many things...even if they are not in sync with mine.  Thank you.

NOTHING is as accomodating as one's own mind and outlook.....having worked in nursing homes most of my life......the 'third age' as
you call it(or read it somewhere) is the winter of one's life.......no more spring/summer or fall coming.......I dont think most of
the public knows what that means.....do you?

there is no more.....I think it's Peter, Paul and Mary or is it the Mama's and the Papa's that sing about the seasons???? I know this
first hand because my elders have taught me MUCH.........AND feeling good counts for crap......they told me so......

Competent, experienced people need to lead the initiative. Agreed. But they don't need to be politicians - or politically appointed. Think of SCORE. That's a HUGE group of retired executives and business owners that find time to teach - educate and help lead the younger, less experienced.  Same scenario. I didn't need the advice any political group to start my business, or keep it going for 12 years - but what I learned through SCORE was invaluable.

Thank you for your compliments. I think we're more in sync than you might realize. We're both fighting for the same thing.

Thank you - for what you've done, and what you're currently doing. I'll pray that you've got many years of service left to those that need.

On the chance of making the sky fall in ... I will say that I agree with MobileTerminal.

A senior center is a need for some .. not all seniors.   For some seniors it is a social place .. but for
others it is a great necessity --- providing food, information, or some type of needed service.

We could say the same thing for a youth center or a community center.   That is why we at LEAST need
to have the discussion  ---- what are the needs?  what are the wants?   how do we prioritize the needs?
how do we prioritize the wants?    ... I could go on ... but I think you get what I am saying.

I also have a thought about a  "virtual town center"  --- tying into the town's webpage .. which quite
honestly   is ok .. but needs a lot of work.       For one thing,   why can't someone attach a
community calendar to that website ... and keep it up to date ?????   I digress .. been known to do
that.
Anyway --- that ties into the openness and transparency ... and also providing real service  --- i have
seen websites of other towns and communities --- and folks can do a lot more electronically on those
sites .. then they can with ours.

This is how the metroplex started!! REALLY!!!

WTH are you thinking????? This is schenectady county! There are TONS AND TONS of non-profits to cover every single aspect for the seniors!

You clearly live in a 'low tax' state that does not offer lucrative welfare programs.

Remember....you're not in OZ anymore!!!

DVR-the sky won't fall in.  MT gets this and he gets it big time.  Reread his post and take it to the office with you.

MT--thank you for your very kind words.  Agreed that we are both fighting for the same thing.  Again I say I am sorry that I never had the opportunity to work directly with you.   You are a man of great commitment to a cause and you do it with great dignity.

BT-there are not tons and tons non profits to cover the seniors.  Did you watch Annie Shaffer go down the tubes.  Catholic Charities is living on borrowed time.  Jewish Family Services will not go into the City to create a NNORC.  And NNORC is the way to go.  United Way and the Long Term Care consortium isn't even beginning to scratch the surface of helping seniors age in place.

Snap out of it!

You're 100% correct BT. But it's gotta start somewhere, by someone. It only took one person, Christopher Columbus, to explore a new world. If not me, then who. If not now, then WHEN?

Dog owners have been hot under the collar about fees at some Long Island dog parks.

On summer weekends, visitors to the "big dog" play area at West Hills must pay a fee of up to $13 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Big dogs are considered those that weigh more than 25 pounds.

However, visitors to the "small dog" park on the other side of West Hills don't pay a fee.

"I wouldn't call it prejudice," said big dog owner Sidney McNeil. "I just think it's stupid."

Some big dog owners, like Lisa LaMorte of Huntington Station, have written county lawmakers, asking for a reduction in the fee. But with Suffolk County facing a huge budget deficit, dog owners seem to be barking up the wrong tree.

"I don't mind paying something," said LaMorte. "But what they are asking is too much."

"I feel sorry for them," said small dog owner Michael Price. "But I am here in the small dog park and very happy about that."

According to Suffolk County officials, canine size doesn't matter at West Hills and is not the reason behind the fees in the "big dog" park.

"The fee charged on the weekends is associated with parking and the amenities offered at the park, which include hiking, picnicking and horseback riding," said county spokeswoman Vanessa Baird-Streeter. "The fee structure that exists precedes the establishment of the dog park."

"Honestly, do they really think I am going to pay $13 to bring my dog here?" asked dog owner Julie Schrana. "I can arrange a play date in my backyard."

Still, other dog owners lamented scaling back their visits to a park they love.

"This is the best dog park on Long Island," said Laura Lerner, as she held her retriever Maki. "I come here every day and people visit from all over the area."

Baird-Streeter said anyone wishing to bring their dogs to the park will not incur a fee Monday through Friday and prior to 8 a.m. and after 4 p.m. on weekends.
