Clothing, footwear tax to be reinstated By ERIC ANDERSON Business Editor Published: 01:00 a.m., Thursday, August 5, 2010
ALBANY -- The state's sales tax exemption on clothing and footwear that costs $110 or less will come to an end, but not until Oct. 1.
The temporary restoration of the 4 percent tax is part of the state budget passed Tuesday night by the state Legislature. The exemption had been in place since 2007.
Many consumers may not have noticed the saving, retail officials believe. That's because most localities continued to levy their own sales tax on the exempt goods.
Still, "when you're saving 4 percent on a purchase of clothing or shoes, that can be and is a meaningful savings," said Ted Potrikus, executive vice president and director of government relations for the Retail Council of New York State.
He said the effective date of Oct. 1 will spare parents from paying the tax when they do their back-to-school shopping. Christmas will be another matter.
"It's a negative," said Jack Yonally, who owns B. Lodge & Co., a downtown Albany department store. He said he expects the tax to have an impact on Christmas sales.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
I talked to a few people today who said that after hearing about this tax, they will be buying their 'clothing' Christmas gifts BEFORE Oct 1st. Many also said they would truck on out to Vermont. And a few said they were putting their houses up for sale this weekend and moving out of NY all together!! One guy said that he and his family were going to move to NJ to see what it's like to have a governor with balls.
