“To Bigotry No Sanction,
to Persecution No Assistance”
George Washington's Letter to the
Jews of Newport, Rhode Island
(1790)

In 1790, President George Washington wrote a letter to the Jewish community of Newport, Rhode Island, affirming the values of tolerance and religious freedom that he saw as the bedrock of the country that he had had helped found and done so much to secure. “The Citizens of the United States of America have a right to applaud themselves for giving to Mankind examples of an enlarged and liberal policy,” Washington wrote. It was “a policy worthy of imitation.”

All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship. It is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights. For happily the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live under its protection, should demean themselves as good citizens.

May the Children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants; while every one shall sit under his own vine and fig tree, and there shall be none to make him afraid.

On the side of Religious Freedom...
GEORGE WASHINGTON.

On the side of bigotry...
Sarah Palin
Newt Gingrich
Rep. Peter King
Carl Paladino
Rick Lazio
Rudy Giuliani

If Islam were more or a religion and less of a virulent aggressive, violent ideology of conquest, hate and oppression then I would agree with you. But its main adherents the world over have already declared that it is at war with the West and America. But it was a nice try- Washington was speaking to the Jews at the temple in Newport when he gave that address. In recorded history of this land, I see no evidence that the Jews ever raised a sword against our state, our people, or our way of life. However, we find that the Islamic religion has become a form of menace to mankind, repeatedly for several hundred years, making itself known even more dangerously in the past four decades or so.

But you can go on believing in accommodation and appeasement right up until the time your grand-daughter is forced into the burka or the rusty knife slices off your own empty head. I for one, chose not to be as naive as the well-meaning democraps (or not-so-well meaning ones intent on selling our country.)

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

I see no evidence that the Muslims ever raised a sword against our state, our people or our way of life.

But

I see a huge mass of evidence that Terrorists (who happen to be Muslim) HAVE raised a sword against our state, our people and our way of life.

BTW... Has America ever attacked Islam???  Maybe in Iraq??? or in Libya? or in Iran, or in Afghanistan? Or in Lebanon ? etc etc etc

...yeahhhhhh, we were wondering how long it was gonna take for you to blame America for the terrorists. Just like the criminals are not to blame-the white, rich businessmen are. Just like the rapist isn't to blame-the short skirted woman is. Just like the Germans weren't to blame-the Jews provoked them, and on and on what your friends at Harvard teach their charges.

It's YOU Graham who BLAME all Muslims for a few Terrorists who attacked us at the WTC.
YOU are the one claiming that Islam is at war with the USA, instead of Terrorists are at war with the USA.

Did "AMERICA" attack Terrorists in Afghanistan & Iraq, or did CHRISTIANS attack Muslims in Afghanistan & Iraq.
By your twisted way of thinking... Muslims attacked the WTC, and Christians attacked Iraq & Afghanistan.

One set of rules condemning  Muslims, and a different set of rules so you don't condemn Christians.

THE ONES I AM NOT BLAMING ARE QUIETLY AND FEARFULLY SITTING IN THEIR DIRT FLOOR HUTS AFRAID TO HAVE THEIR HEADS CHOPPED OFF BY THE ONES I AM BLAMING. I suppose you will now tell us it is because they are all poor and have no opportunity because of American greed and Western imperialism too. Maybe capitalism and the Crusades caused a lot, which can blamed directly on Christianity as well.

Where do you find this stuff???  Is there a Conservatives Dumba$$ quotes book somewhere???

IMO. The young Muslim mostly men, who are being recruited are fed a long list of "America is evil, and it's your duty to kill Americans" crap.
Terrorists are very good at getting 'others' to die for 'their' causes... and the main tool they use is a perversion of radical Islam, on young impressionable Muslim youth.

The Japanese had a similar version to brain wash young Japanese men to become Kamikazes, as they died for Japan & Religion.
Mix Conservative Radical Religion (any religion it seems) with a cause of Patriotism and preach it nonstop to young boys... and you have a suicide bomber.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission voted unanimously in favor of an application to end the protected status of the 1850s Italian Renaissance palazzo-style building, which now houses only an abandoned clothing store.

"The commission voted 9-0 in favor of removing the building at 45-47 Park Place" from the landmarks list, said the body's chairman Robert Tierney.

Supporters say the project will help build bridges between the West and the Muslim world and transform both the drab lower Manhattan street and the way Americans have looked on Muslims since 9/11.

By your twisted logic, America didn't attack Afghanistan & Iraq, THE AMERICAN MILITARY AND THOSE THAT SUPPORTED THE WARS DID.  Since we are parsing words, only those aligned ideologically with the war efforts would be guilty.  Maybe you would like to call the U.S. military American extremist that attacked Afghanistan and the Taliban.

When I start seeing evidence of a growing number of Christian preachers with the resources, to begin bombing Islamic cities in the name of Jesus Christ, I will condemn them with even greater prejudice.  But...Until then, I will continue to stay in reality and not buy into your brand of moral relativity, it's suicidal.

Ah Cicero...
so your one of those rare Conservative Right Wingers who DO NOT consider America to be a "CHRISTIAN NATION".

I agree, it isn't.
If it were, as many Conservatives seem to believe, then "Christian America" would have attacked "Muslim Afghanistan. "

We have come here to Governors Island to stand where the earliest settlers first set foot in New Amsterdam, and where the seeds of religious tolerance were first planted. We've come here to see the inspiring symbol of liberty that, more than 250 years later, would greet millions of immigrants in the harbor, and we come here to state as strongly as ever - this is the freest City in the world. That's what makes New York special and different and strong.

~In the mid-1650s, the small Jewish community living in Lower Manhattan petitioned Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant for the right to build a synagogue - and they were turned down.

~In 1657, when Stuyvesant also prohibited Quakers from holding meetings, a group of non-Quakers in Queens signed the Flushing Remonstrance, a petition in defense of the right of Quakers and others to freely practice their religion.~
It was perhaps the first formal, political petition for religious freedom in the American colonies - and the organizer was thrown in jail and then banished from New Amsterdam.

~In the 1700s, even as religious freedom took hold in America, Catholics in New York were effectively prohibited from practicing their religion - and priests could be arrested.
~The simple fact is this building is private property, and the owners have a right to use the building as a house of worship.

The government has no right whatsoever to deny that right - and if it were tried, the courts would almost certainly strike it down as a violation of the U.S. Constitution.
(New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg)

Executive Order's 9066 & 9102 given by the liberal legend himself Franklin Roosevelt.

Box, you continue to quote examples of religious intolerance throughout American history.  But there isn't the overwhelming evidence of a well organized well funded terror network hell bent on killing Americans and promising more attacks, possibly with chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons in your examples.  But I guess you can't when trying to make everything morally relative.

In your most far out dreams, if they removed an old property from a historic landmark list to build a non-denominational church, a sportsman's club, or a Boy Scout Troop headquarters, there would be screaming and gnashing of teeth in the most violent and furious manner ever from the left wing from one coast to another! Protesters by the boatload from each corner of the globe, letters of protests in every major paper, editorials and just an obscene and outrageous show of disbelief using every liberal democrap code word like "offensive" bizarre" "angry" "reactionary" "injust" blah blah blah

..and yes- it is further evidence of sucking the muzzies' balls until their heads explode. We can't do enough but fall prostrate to them and offer up all our first born virgin daughters to show "reconciliation." I say show them reconciliation with hot lead and TNT. F' em.
