WASHINGTON (AP) -- Fears that the economic recovery is fizzling grew Thursday after the government and private sector issued weak reports on a number of fronts.
Unemployment claims are up, home sales are plunging without government incentives and manufacturing growth is slowing.
Meanwhile, 1.3 million people are without federal jobless benefits now that Congress adjourned for a weeklong Independence Day recess without passing an extension. That number could grow to 3.3 million by the end of the month if lawmakers can't resolve the issue when they return.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Contracts for pending sales of previously owned homes plunged a record 30 percent in May, far more than expected, after a popular tax credit expired at the end of the prior month, a survey from the National Association of Realtors showed on Thursday.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New claims for state jobless benefits unexpectedly rose last week, while manufacturing activity and employment slowed in June, heightening fears the U.S. economic recovery is stalling.
The data on Thursday added to concerns over the risk of a double-dip recession, although many analysts said a renewed downturn was unlikely as the production side of the economy continues to expand, though less briskly than earlier.
"None of the data is good for the bullish camp, which was expecting a V-shaped recovery for the rest of the year. These numbers suggest fatigue in the consumer sector," said Joseph Battipaglia, a market strategist at Stifel Nicolaus in Yardley, Pennsylvania.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 13,000 to 472,000, the Labor Department said, above market expectations for 452,000.
Did you ever notice that ever since Obama took office... when ever there is any bad news for America... Jobs loss, economic loss, oil well disaster...etc when a Conservative speaks of these incidents they always have a huge grin on their face...
Kind of as if they really want "Obama (& America) to fail"!

No, never noticed that. My post didn't indicate that, it merely brought the FACTS out - not some fallacy or dream by a woman who thinks she should be queen.

Sorry, fail again. LMAO! As if you were in a position to know!!!
OK... " My data is directly from the Department of Labor, not some independent blog that's 5 months old."
My data is directly from The Department Of Labor, dated June4th, 2010. My data is, as I posted previously, from the "BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS", which if you bothered to read the post you'd know, IS THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR, that you declined to accept as valid!
On Page #1, Chart #2 is Nonfarm payroll employment over-the-month change, seasonally adjusted, May 2008 – May 2010 Which is the same graph that I posted earlier but with out the labels for Bush and Obama.
SO how did you put it??? "Sorry, fail again"!

Yeah, all the businesses are lining up to expand, hire people, build plants, invest in equipment, dump tons into R&D, raise salaries, etc. All is GREAT. No one is waiting for the other show to drop, and the small business community is overflowing with confidence, encouragement and hope that they won't be the next "people's whipping boy" for the man-boy from Chicago (via Columbia, via, Hawaii, via Indonesia.)
Really, everyone is TOTALLY optimistic that the government hasn't run their credit cards 200 times over the limit, mortgaged the house for 100x value, and then started printing cash up on the Xerox. Really, things look great from here. I have been re-edumacated since I am obviously a decadent subversive. I am a true believer"

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
Everything ISN'T optimistic, but at least the USA has recovered & turned the loss of jobs around, managing to regain jobs lost in the Bush Economic Meltdown since 2007.
There is still a long way to go to rebuilding this economy and OBSTACLES working against recovery, like those who would prefer that the USA FAIL, as long as they regain power.

Unemployment benefits are creating jobs faster than practically any other program, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday.
Talking to reporters, the House speaker was defending a jobless benefits extension against those who say it gives recipients little incentive to work. By her reasoning, those checks are helping give somebody a job.
"It injects demand into the economy," Pelosi said, arguing that when families have money to spend it keeps the economy churning. "It creates jobs faster than almost any other initiative you can name."
Pelosi said the aid has the "double benefit" of helping those who lost their jobs and acting as a "job creator" on the side.
Your numbers are wrong...(Clinton 4.0- Bush 5.8. 1st year of Obama, 9.3) When GWB took office in January of 2001, unemployment was 4.2% When Obama took office in January of 2009 unemployment was 7.7% Today it is 9.7%
